SHIRLEY JUNE WASNEY
(nee PASSEY) (TELFORD)
Born on June 10, 1928

On Monday, August 9, 2021, our Mom, Grandma, Grambo, Big Grandma, GG, Aunt, and friend changed our lives forever with her passing.
Mom's was a life well and fully lived. Family was everything to her. She was born the sixth of seven children to Agnes and James Passey. Her brothers, Thomas, James, Harold, Russell, Jack, and sister Evelyn and their families were always close to Mom's heart. Many wonderful years were spent camping and cottaging with her siblings, all of their children and, even grandchildren.
Mom married Thomas Telford in 1950 and three children followed, William (Bill), John and Tracy.
Mom was a modern woman in many regards. She worked full time, looked after the kids and her mother, went to the European Health Spa, bowled, was part of a "Ladies Club" that met for over 70 years and was a thrifter long before it was cool.
Mom had many jobs, but most notably in sales and customer service at Sears. She was recognized as an excellent employee and was able to progress into human resources and enjoy a successful career at several different workplaces. Mom retired from Jostens on her 65th birthday. Her work didn't stop then though, it just evolved into being available full time for pick ups and deliveries of any family member who needed her. She also spent her free time volunteering at her granddaughter's school and was much loved by the students.
Mom was a storyteller and could recall every minute detail. She could cook and bake anything and many of her favourite recipes (including her chocolate chip cookie recipe) were passed down so that her great-grandchildren could enjoy them. Mom loved watching sports on TV and in person. She often had three VCRs running to catch every tennis match, golf, and curling game. She was also present at all of her grandchildren's games and even enjoyed weekends away travelling with their teams to tournaments. Mom came from a long line of card players and loved a good game.
Mom loved large and was loved large in return. She was not only close to her own family but also forged close relationships with friends of her family members. One of her granddaughter's friends expressed that losing grandma was like losing their own grandparent.
Mom lost her beloved son Bill in 1996 but was blessed to have his wife Cheryl who Mom loved as her daughter right to the end.
Missing Mom are Cheryl (Gord), John (Sherry), Tracy (Roy); grandchildren, Shawn (Matt), John (Lindsay), Keri, Kyle (Megan), Kathryn, and Morgann (Greg). Her great-grandchildren, Avery, William, Elayna, Mollie, James, Liam, and Meilya were so loved and lucky to have had her in their lives. Also missed by special nieces, Sydney and Linda.
Special thanks to all of the staff at the Rosewood, especially Loren, Camille, and Cherri. The weekly FaceTime calls that you facilitated between Mom and her family for the last 16 months were greatly appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • It's really hard to imagine 'family' without Aunty Shirl. She was the lynch pin and certainly the life of any party. Almost all of my early childhood memories include Aunty Shirley in some way. I am so grateful for the last few years and our nearly daily chats. The many years separation with me in Europe and her in Canada just didn't matter and we reconnected in a very important way for both of us. Love you always Aunty Shirl. - Posted by: Sydney Passey (niece) on: Sep 13, 2021

  • I have only found out about Auntie Shirley's death. I was very sad to hear of her passing. I remember her as an excellent story teller. She could hold the attention of a room, was very funny and dramatic. I remember her as a stylish, modern woman. She was very devoted to her family. She was "the last of the Mohicans", surviving all her siblings. Maybe she's with them now having a laugh, smoking, because Why Not? and enjoying herself. I may not have been her favorite niece but remember her fondly all the same. - Posted by: Laurie Passey Zahn (niece) on: Sep 11, 2021

  • I just heard of Shirley's passing today and wanted to offer my deepest condolences to you, Cheryl and Shawn and your family. I got to know Shirley when Cheryl brought her to Ronald McDonald House and Shirley always came with her delicious baking for the families. She was such a joy and we always enjoyed her visits. - Kerry Mushumanski - Posted by: Kerry Mushumanski (Friend) on: Sep 07, 2021
