CAROLINA (CAROL) DARRAGH
(ANDERSON)
Carol was born April 1, 1929 at Winnipegosis, Manitoba. Her parents owned a business in the area and the family was very involved in the community there. After leaving Winnipegosis, the family had a business in Mentmore, MB and then again in Rivercrest just outside Winnipeg. Years later they finally settled in Winnipeg.
Her parents Ingolfur and Laura, and five brothers, Helgie, Andy, Finn, Con and Chris all predeceased her. She is survived by her husband Brian; daughters: Ingrid (Rick, Braden (Cindi), Eric (Samantha) and Jaxon) and Char (Morley, Matt and Ariel); nephew Tim who lived with us for many years (Kathy), sister-in-law Ida, and many nieces and nephews.
Carol had attended Success Business College. She worked in T. Eaton Co. Wages Office until our daughters were born. She was then devoted to raising our family and caring for her parents.
In the early 1980s, she was the Business Manager of the Logberg Heimskringla Icelandic newspaper for six years. She enjoyed being in charge of advertising and it gave her the opportunity to speak with several of the businesses throughout the Icelandic community within Manitoba. I'm sure many of those people will remember her.
Carol was also busy in other areas as we were members of First Lutheran Church for 65 years. She taught Sunday school there for a few years. When she was younger she was involved with the choir as well.
Carol was also a Brownie Leader for six years. She had a brownie pack of 30 girls who were about 6 to 12 years old. The activities involved with this kept her busy many days of the week.
She was very proud of her Icelandic heritage. Christmas and Easter and other special occasions saw family baking evenings where everyone was participating making as many as 14 vinetarta at the same time. The two of us regularly volunteered at the Islendingadagurin at Gimli for years, at the Scandinavian pavilion at Folklorama and with the Icelandic Fron. In 2013, we received a certificate for "Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Icelandic National League of North America". It was awarded in Seattle Washington in 2013. We were unable to make the trip but were very proud to be acknowledged.
Carol had traced her family tree and had found many family members in Iceland. We started meeting them on our first trip there in 1974. Overall we made three trips to Iceland together.
We met on a blind date in August 1951, 70 years ago. Last August 27 we celebrated our 65th anniversary. How many guys can stretch a blind date that far?!! But it was a great benefit for both of us.
We're very grateful to Dr. Brian Sharkey for the years of wonderful care he gave Mom.
Cremation has taken place and a private service has been held.
