ROBERT MCDOWELL

It is with great sadness that we announce that Robert (Bob) McDowell passed away peacefully with family on Salt Spring Island, BC on August 24, 2021 at 83.
Bob was born in Winnipeg, and set out in his teens and enjoyed a variety of work and adventures that took him to the Arctic, Saskatchewan and Ontario. In 1960, Bob began a successful career in insurance, and soon established his own insurance business and became a licensed real estate agent. In 1974, Bob was elected President of the Manitoba Insurance Agents Association and later moved his young family to Vancouver to continue his insurance career before retiring in 1997 to fulfill his dream to own acreage and play more golf by purchasing Farmington Fairways Golf Course located near Dawson Creek, BC. After returning to Vancouver in 2007, Bob enjoyed renovating homes and volunteering with the Pacific Open Heart Association. In 2019, Bob moved to Salt Spring Island where he purchased a small acreage and kept very busy with home improvement projects and his family. Bob will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, sailing and golf, chocolate desserts, his smart business mind, his gentle and unending love, loyalty and generosity, but most of all, for his sense of humour.
Bob was predeceased by parents, John and Della (Wight) McDowell; daughter Colleen; and is survived by children, Karen McDowell, Shannon Nielsen (John), Chris McDowell (Maureen); nine grandchildren, Lindsay, Jenna, Kara, Hannah, Jack, Madeline, Chloe, Kiefer, Connor, one great-granddaughter, Margot, and sister Marilyn McDowell.
No service, by request.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pacific Open Heart Association or the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation.

  • I am saddened by the news of Bob's passing. I had the good fortune to spend time with him both in Winnipeg and Vancouver and benefited immensely from the experience. Bob was genuine with an infectious personality and caring attitude, always appreciative for effort on his behalf. I will always be grateful our paths crossed. - Posted by: Garry Harland (Friend) on: Sep 08, 2021
