JOHN ALEXANDER GRAY, FCA
May 11, 1946 - August 16, 2021
John was born in West Sussex, England, to his English mother, Joyce Hartridge, and his Canadian Soldier father, John Carter Gray. As an infant, John immigrated to Canada with Joyce and was reunited with his father in Winnipeg, where John continued to live throughout his lifetime.
John was well liked and made many lasting friendships; a forever generous and loyal friend. He was active in mind and body and did everything with enthusiasm and passion, whether it was singing in a Barbershop chorus or playing sports. John excelled at many sports, playing up to Junior level football and hockey. He later enjoyed going back to coach for the Fort Garry Lions Football Club, and much later, enjoyed his Oldtimers hockey games. We still remember the phone calls for "Thunderskates". Then there was curling and always, his beloved golf. Besides the challenge of a game, John thoroughly enjoyed the comraderie associated with it.
John graduated as a Chartered Accountant in 1972, being presented with his Fellow of Chartered Accountants in 1996. He became a partner with W.D. Love & Co. and stayed with the firm through various name designations, moving to Craig Ross shortly before retirement.
John sat on various Boards, becoming President of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba and President of the Fort Rouge Curling Club. Most recently he held the position of Treasurer of the Board of the EDGE Adult Literacy Program.
After retirement John enjoyed spending time in Guayabitos, Mexico, with Sandy and their two roommates, Heather and Campi; always a man's man, John was still easy going enough to live with three women!
John always had a twinkle in his eye and enjoyed a good laugh. His smile was infectious and could light up a room. He was truly a beautiful soul who will be greatly missed.
John was predeceased by his much loved mum in January, 2020 and his father in 1952. He is survived by his wife Sandy, daughters, Alison, Laura (Jamie), grandchildren, Kieran, Ethan, Isobel, his brother Bryan and his aunts, Edna Hartridge of Arundel, England, and Evelyn Cooke of Thunder Bay, ON, plus numerous cousins in England and Canada.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
Celebration of Life will be held on October 22, 2021, at the St. Boniface Golf Course at 2:00 p.m. Double Vaccination and masks required. Please RSVP to rsvpjag@gmail.com by Thursday, October 14. Make a donation to

My deepest condolences to Sandy and family. I was so sorry to hear of John’s passing. John was a dear friend and accountant to my late husband Bill. They had a wonderful work and friend relationship. John’s wonderful sense of humor and brilliant way with numbers saw us through many years of business. He was a very special man and will certainly be missed. - Posted by: Marilyn Hiebert (Friend and Ex client) on: Oct 21, 2021

It saddens me to find out that my old boss from Collins Barrow days has left us. He was an awesome boss and friend. I miss all the guys from there. We were like family. I also miss our rides into work in the mornings. John would see me standing at the bus stop on St. Mary's and Fermor and stop to pick me up and drive me to work. I thought that was so nice of him. Sandy, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and the girls. - Posted by: Kimberley Zebiere (Friend and past employee) on: Oct 18, 2021

We were so sorry to hear about John's passing. We will miss our card games (golf) with him. There were always lots of laughs. It will be strange not seeing him in Mexico where we had so much fun. Our deepest condolences to Sandy and daughters. - Posted by: myrna jubinville (friend) on: Sep 27, 2021

Lois and I were very saddened to learn of John’s sudden passing. And while it has been years since we have shared time with John and Sandy given we have not lived in Winnipeg since 1976…..it seems like just yesterday that we did. The world has lost a great man and a huge contributor toward making it a better place for us all. Big hugs and love to Sandy and the family.
