PAUL ANTOINE RIVARD
Paul was predeceased by Simone, his loving spouse of 73 years, last December. Left to cherish his memory are his five children: Leonard (Linda) and Ronald (Lilliane), both from Winnipeg, Diane Scott (Joe) from Chatham, New Hampshire, Rosanne Holland (David) from Calgary, and Bruno from Kitchener. Paul was very proud of his children, as well as his 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
The third of seven children, he was born in Ste. Elizabeth, a small farming community in Southern Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943, certified as a wireless air gunner in 1944, and received a commission as pilot officer before joining the R.C.A.F. Reserve.
During military training, he learned Morse code which enabled him to secure employment with the Canadian National Railway after the war. His long career with the CNR allowed him to work as station agent in many Manitoba communities, train dispatcher in Winnipeg, as well as rules instructor at the school in Gimli.
Paul was extremely competitive in most games and sports: he even achieved an eight-ender in curling once in local club play. Simone and Paul enjoyed both golfing and curling together, as well as many trips with friends to Arizona, Texas, Florida, and Hawaii. Nonetheless, family was always uppermost in their minds and they would think nothing of packing up and moving to help their children during difficult or trying times.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Centre de santé Saint-Boniface and the Victoria General Hospital during the final chapter in his life's journey.
