KATHERINE (TINA) DYCK
(nee WIEBE)
January 23, 1930 July 9, 2021
She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 62 years (Henry Dyck), her son and daughter-in-law (Darrell and Dolores Dyck), her daughters and sons-in-law (Brenda and Mark Erb; Karen Dyck and Rick Olson), her grandchildren (Ryan and Cody Erb, Jana and Scott Olson) and her sister (Doreen Wiebe). Mom was predeceased by her three sisters and two brothers.
Mom was born near Rosenfeld on January 23, 1930, to Diedrich and Henrietta Wiebe. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in the Reichenbach School District. Mom always spoke fondly of her years on the farm. The beautiful flower gardens she created there were well known and admired by everyone who passed their yard. Mom never shied away from hard work and, as a young woman, she held numerous jobs including beet topper, cook, and housekeeper.
Mom met and fell in love with Henry Dyck, and they were married on February 7, 1959. They lived in Winnipeg where they raised their three children Brenda, Darrell, and Karen. Mom and Dad worked hard to provide a wonderful life for their children and made numerous sacrifices along the way. They always led by example, encouraging their children to be kind to others, hard working, and responsible. In fact, some of our fondest memories come from the weekends when we'd pile into the family car and go "bottle picking" as a way of earning some extra money. Mom was an amazing cook, incredible seamstress, and expert gardener (vegetables and flowers) and somehow always found ways to make the family budget stretch. As her children grew older Mom began working outside the home but throughout her life her family remained her number one priority. Mom eventually retired after 20 years of working as a dietary aide at the Municipal Hospitals (Riverview Health Centre).
Mom was also a loving grandmother and mother-in-law and the times she cherished most were when we were all home for family gatherings. As much as Mom loved hosting family dinners, her failing eyesight made it difficult to for her to continue this later in her life and this tradition was passed down to her children. Although we did our best, we just couldn't seem to make the food taste as good as Mom's.
Unfortunately, Mom's health declined shortly after her 90th birthday and she spent the last seven months of her life in and out of hospital. Despite her failing health and hospitalizations, Mom's determination and kind heart continued to shine through. Hospital staff often commented on what a lovely woman Mom was and that she never complained. With family by her side, Mom passed away peacefully on July 9.
We would like to thank the health care aides, nurses, and physicians at Concordia Hospital for taking such good care of Mom during her final days. We also want to thank Pastor Justin for providing spiritual care to Mom and for also supporting us during this difficult time.
A private family service will be held on October 9.
If so desired, donations may be made in Mom's name to Fighting Blindness Canada or Mennonite Central Committee Canada.
