NANCY SCHEIMAN

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy Scheiman, at the age of 65. Nancy passed away peacefully on September 11, 2021, with her lifelong partner, Neil Stern, by her side.
Nancy is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews whom she cherished dearly as her own children: Shane Kozlowich (Carly Shuler), Tara Kozlowich (Paul Shur), Mariah Clarke (Kristian) and Ari Simon, as well as her sisters: Fae Simon (Carl Findlay) and Zahava Scheiman Burkhardt (Klaus).
Nancy adored her grandnieces and nephews: Samara Shur, Paula Kozlowich, Bailee Shur, Sam Kozlowich and Sienna Clarke. She doted on them and loved their jokes and antics.
Nancy had a very close and treasured relationship with her oldest sister Shirley Kozlowich, who sadly and very recently predeceased her. Nancy though deeply grieved, maintained her strength and courage to carry on for a while longer.
Nancy was born on May 28, 1956, to Bella and Moshe Scheiman. She grew up in the North End of Winnipeg and attended Peretz School, Luxton School, and West Kildonan Collegiate. Enduring friendships were established and continued throughout her life. While attending first year university, Nancy immediately met her lifetime (some would say persistent) soulmate Neil Stern. An inseparable couple, they enjoyed over 46 years of amusement and happiness. Never a day without deep long hugs, holding hands, or uproarious laughter.
Always a worker, Nancy was employed at a very early age as a Pharmacy Tech at Economy Drugs until she graduated the Faculty of Education from University of Manitoba and then began a long and satisfying career as an elementary school teacher beginning at Shaughnessy Park, followed by Cecil Rhodes and finally grade 3 at Sargent Park School. Teaching was the perfect profession for Nancy. She loved organization and orderliness and ran a challenging but stimulating classroom. She often joked about employing her "teacher look" but her students knew it belied a deep caring for them, and that her first concern was for their delight in learning. It wasn't unusual for former, now adult students to keep her up to date on their latest accomplishments.
Nancy formed many deep and lasting close friendships at these schools. Her crew of friends were literally life sustaining and several became family. During the last years of her illness, Nancy desired closer contact with her special people but sadly Covid restrictions made this challenging. Nevertheless, Nancy never complained. She just found a way. Never effusive or one to gush with sentimentality, she deeply cherished their love and support and above all the fun and laughs provided by her friends.
Nancy reluctantly retired in June 2017 following her diagnosis. Rather than ask "Why me?" she would always say "Ok, what's the next step?" Always positive and optimistic. She learned to live by the mantra, taught to her by her close friend Sue: "Live for today and let tomorrow take care of itself." And Nancy truly learned to live one day at a time and find joy every day. Nancy led a quiet life. Her bliss was summer at the lake, hiking beaches and trails in the woods, and gathering up the peace and tranquility she found on her long walks as wonderful memories to later share. Ultimately Nancy's story is a love story. Notwithstanding her many travels and adventures, great or small, her greatest contentment was to just be at home with Neil. And laughing, always laughing.
Nancy wanted to especially thank Dr. Paul for his incredible expertise and compassionate care, and Dr. Fatoye, and his crew (Maribeth, Karis) for their trusted advice and support and Tamara for her special assistance and encouragement.
Funeral services were held September 13 at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Special thanks to Cantor Tracy Kasner for her beautiful voice and eulogy, and support at that difficult time.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I graduated in 2022, and I've been trying to track down my teachers throughout the years. Mrs. Scheiman was my third-grade teacher at Sargent Park School in 2012-2013. She pushed me to be the best person I could be, and never stopped believing in me throughout the year. I'm now at McGill University, and she played a role in this achievement. I wish I could say thank you in person. Rest peacefully. - Posted by: Justin (Former Student) on: Jun 05, 2023
