Peacefully, after a short but courageous fight, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janis Leone Smith (nee Thompson) of Oakbank MB at the age of 58 years in the early morning hours of Sunday September 26, 2021 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Left to celebrate Jan's life are her beloved husband Brad; big sister Kathy (Don); FIL Brian Smith; sisters-in-law, Doris Dekleva and Carolin Backmann-Smith; brothers-in-law, Don Dupuis, Sean Smith and Brett Smith (Carolin); nieces, Breanne, Amy, Jenna and Brooke; nephews, Robert, Bret and Zachary and Ben; great-nephews, Jordan and Easton as well as numerous extended family and many many friends.
Jan was predeceased by her father Bob Thompson, mother Shirley Thompson, MIL Winnie Smith as well as her brother Geoff Thompson.
Jan attended Glenwood and Lavalee Schools as well as Glenlawn High School. Later she received diplomas from Red River College in Graphic Design as well as Multimedia Design.
Jan has chosen to be interred alongside her mother in Bossevain MB
Special thanks to Dr. Kumar of Grace Hospital ICU as well as the tremendous staff working with him to help Jan.
Thanks also to Kathy and Don Dupuis, Doris Dekleva, Jenna Thompson, Amy Dupuis and my Dad, Brian Smith for their help during this terrible time.
Janis was always a Free Spirit who truly enjoyed meeting people and befriending them as well as loving all animals she met.
Jan loved hummingbirds so if you happen to see one somewhere unexpected that is Jan come for a visit.
A celebration of Jan's life will be held October 10, 2021 at The Polo Park Inn Ballroom commencing at 1:00 p.m.
Anyone wishing to make a donation in Jan's name could donate to an animal shelter of their choice or to The Canadian Mental Health Association.

  • I was saddened to hear the passing of my old friend. We were friends since high school and were inseparable in our party days, making our rounds at the Dak, Zoo and the Norwood. Jan always had a sparkle in her eyes for adventures and wasn't afraid to try something new. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family as you are now with the angels. - Posted by: Cynthia Hindmarsh (Friend) on: Oct 07, 2021
