Date of Passing: Sep 27, 2021Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or Memory
She was predeceased by her parents, Mike and Mary Sunka, husbands, Jack MacKay and Noel Desrochers, brother Robert Sunka, nephew Tom, and daughter-in-law Susan MacKay.
She will be sadly missed by her five children: Jack, Terry (Liz), Pat (Rosita), Marcie (Ben) and Richard (Christine); eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Dorothy, niece Cheryl, and many relatives and friends.
Eileen had lots of energy and was always very active in her community. She was a very dedicated volunteer for CancerCare Manitoba, Deer Lodge Centre, and Tuxedo Villa. She devoted years of service to the Canadian Order of Foresters and sat on the board for Mike Sunka Place, her father's legacy.
Eileen had many talents. She was very skilled in her crafting and knitted hundreds of children's toques for charity and created the most beautiful quilts, blankets and sweaters. She would always prepare the best perogies, cabbage rolls, borscht, and fresh baking for all to enjoy.
She was not afraid of hard work and would roll up her sleeves and jump to help. She loved everything about gardening and would help her family, including her cousins the Sumka brothers, with the plants. She was the Queen of yard sales! She was a natural at organizing and selling.
She travelled to many countries including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and China. However, her eyes would light up if Las Vegas was mentioned. She took many trips to Vegas but by far her greatest thrill was to see Celine Dion.
Eileen had so many people from various organizations who cared and assisted her over the past few years. A heartfelt thank you goes to Dr. J. Tadrous, Dr. P. Daeninck, Shawna, and the staff of Victoria Hospital Oncology, the Pharmacy team at Sobeys on Taylor, Monique, Lana and the nurses of Palliative Care, the daily caregivers that came to Sterling House, and Salina at Riverview Heath Care Centre. Thank you to Susan, her staff, and the many dear friends at Sterling House who were her support network. Eileen received amazing care from the staff at Jocelyn House Hospice. Thank you for making her last few months so peaceful and happy.
As per Eileen's wishes there will be no formal service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jocelyn House Hospice, 177 Egerton Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 2W7.
Rest in Peace Eileen, Mom, Mama,
Grandma, Nanny, Lil Ma.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)
Eileen graced our entire extended family for many years. Always thoughtful, helpful and quite the crafts person, she welcomed us into her family and we shared the bitter and the sweet life hands us. We treasure our memories of times together and send our love and care in your time of grief. She was our families’ good friend. - Posted by: Sylvia Pitch and family (Friend of family) on: Oct 14, 2021
Eileen was a woman who gave of herself to those who needed help whether organizing a garage sale, cooking for various functions be it for family, and extended family, or The Order of Canadian Foresters. Eileen's cooking skills were developed by working with her mother in the kitchen to create delicious ethnic dishes. She enjoyed her volunteer work for the many organizations that she was involved with. On behave of my family we send our condolences to Jack, Terry, Pat, Marcie, and Richard and their families on the loss of your mom. May she rest in peace. My sincere sympathy to all of the family. My prayers and thoughts are with you all in this difficult time. Sincerely, Doreen Geirnaert and family - Posted by: Doreen Geirnaert (Aunty) on: Oct 02, 2021
Aunty Eileen always greeted you with her warm inviting smile and kind words. Though her life was full of her own challenges and demands she always found time for others. She worked so hard helping others I often wondered where she found the energy. Aunty Eileen and my mother Mary Sumka were lifelong friends, always there for each other. Their relationship and times together helped them both in hard times and happy times. Two soulmates navigating life separately, always there for each other. Aunty Eileen was a force to be reckoned with, but took the time to listen. Discussions always about family were dynamic, and made me think and accept things as they were rather than remain angry. Thank you Aunty Eileen for being in our lives, it's time for you to rest and enjoy Bingo with Mom. Our condolences to Patsy, Jack, Terry, Marcie, Richard and their families. Your Mom is truly an Angel, may she rest in Peace. - Posted by: Stephen Sumka (Donna) (Nephew) on: Oct 02, 2021
