1926 - 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dorothy Funnell, who passed away peacefully on October 3, 2021 at the West Park Manor Personal Care home.
She was born on August 29, 1926 in Virden Manitoba, the youngest child of the Reverend Canon and Mrs. G.W. Findlay. At an early age, the family moved to St. James, where Dorothy continued to live until she and her husband John retired.
Dorothy was an accomplished pianist and organist. She taught piano to many people over a 44 year career, retiring in 1987. During this time, she was also the choir director and organist at St. James Anglican Church and then St. Bede's Anglican Church. She volunteered her time at the Grace and Deer Lodge Hospitals and was on the women's committee of the Manitoba Music Festival.
On October 14, 1950, she married John Francis Funnell QC. Still in good health, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2020.
Dorothy loved her summers spent at their Victoria Beach Cottage "The Fun House" and after they retired, they took up winter residence in Mesa, Arizona.
Her family, music, the church, entertaining, a good game of Bridge and a party were her passions; always with a smile.
Left to cherish her memory is her son George and his wife Carol; daughter Cathy and her partner Cathy; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great- great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at West Park Manor for their excellent care and compassion and to Dr. Heather Frame for her years of medical expertise.
Reunited with her beloved John who died on March 22, 2021. Forever in our hearts!
A private family service and interment will take place.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My condolences to George and Cathy and to your larger families, upon hearing of both John and Dorothy’s passing this year. My friendship goes back many years, through our mutual association at St Bede’s. Dorothy was organist at my wedding, in the 1970’s. Within the parish, we all had so much fun putting on musicals under Dorothy’s capable and hard-working direction (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and others). A lovely couple who will be missed. - Posted by: Catherine (Lee) on: Oct 31, 2021

  • Oh my dear Dorothy! It is something to say that I have known you for 66 years of my life. I started taking lessons with Dorothy when I was 8. I performed in her recitals for six years, and she always encouraged me to challenge myself. When I came back to piano 20 years later, she was the person that I turned to. John frequently looked after my daughter so that I could finish my lesson. The night before my last exam with her was a blizzard, and Dorothy offered her spare room (and a glass of something fun) so that I wouldn't have to make a 30 mile drive to the examination hall. I recall sitting in front of the fireplace in their lovely home on Overdale. SO many memories of a truly beautiful and generous spirit. And that laugh!! Thank you Dorothy and John. - Posted by: Cheryl Gorrie Whitehead (Friend, student, fellow teacher) on: Oct 31, 2021

  • I was sorry to hear of Dorothy's passing. My daughter Kristen took piano lessons from her and really enjoyed her lessons; she made good progress during her years taking lessons with her. Dorothy was an excellent teacher and a lovely person. Marlene Beaty - Posted by: Marlene Beaty (friend) on: Oct 15, 2021

  • Dorothy was my piano teacher for several years and it was a pleasure learning from her. She was a marvellous teacher and person and a very committed Anglican. - Posted by: Frances Ruth (Jackson) Steeves (Friend/ fellow member of St. James Anglican Church, Wpg.) on: Oct 12, 2021

  • John and Cathy I’m so sorry for the lose of your Mum. She was a precious lady. First met her as a junior choir member and then senior choir at St. James Anglican. Then reconnected at Victoria Beach years later and enjoyed many gin and tonics with both of your parents and Cathy. She was a true spirit and always full of life and fun. Will always remember 💕💕 - Posted by: Marilyn Davis (Friend ) on: Oct 10, 2021
