THOMAS BRUCE TATARYN
1956 - 2021

With profound sadness, we the family announce the passing of Tom on October 5, 2021 at the Selkirk Regional Hospital.
Predeceased by his parents, Walter and Louise; his brother Paul and his wife Inez (nee Wilkinson); Tom leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Val and Doug Shale, Margaret and Darwin Donachuk and brother Stan and Patti; as well as the Wilkinson family, Murray (Joan), Owen (Marilyn), Betty Anne (Ken), Daniel, Rita (Herb), Neil (Kristin), Eric (Jen); along with many nieces and nephews.
Tom grew up in a semi-rural environment just south of Selkirk, Manitoba and from an early age, he and his friends enjoyed exploring the riverbank, woods and fields in the area. This evolved into a lifetime passion for hunting, fishing and walks through the woods for the simple pleasure derived from being with nature. Tom, never having children of his own, was a father figure to many. He is remembered by a simple phrase: "I'll help you with that!" Tom was an electrician by trade and an employee of Gerdau Steel for 41 years, retiring in the position of co-chair of Safety. He was First Vice-President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 42, where he held a membership for 45 years. Tom was devoted to fundraising, organizing many Mug, Spud and Steak events and was a poppy officer.
An outdoor service will be held on Wednesday, October 20 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Clements Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Mawejje, with a reception to follow at the Legion Hall, Selkirk. Due to COVID restrictions, it is required that those wishing to attend wear a mask and be fully vaccinated.
At this time, we would like to acknowledge our sincere appreciation to the staff at Betel Home, Selkirk, who cared for Tom with kindness, dignity and respect.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB R3P 2T5.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • My deepest condolences to your family, I will forever miss Tom. I hadn’t seen him for maybe 2-3 weeks before his passing day. From the moment he came in to betel I loved him. We talked forever the day he came in, about his family, him knowing my stepdad from work at the Mill, and assuring him he’s in good hands, as he was. Man he has a place in my heart. Every morning I’d say hello handsome, hey good lookin’, or oh my God, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes. He was a dear friend, and he taught me a lot about life, and love through our conversations. I am a casual there now, so going back for a shift will be sad to say the least... Love you, Tom. - Posted by: Renée (Betel Home staff, and friend) on: Nov 07, 2021

  • My condolences to Tom's family and friends. My memories with Tom reach back to the 70's, 80's and 90's, those were some fun times for sure. I do remember him saying "I can help you with that" and also the smile on his face. Memories of times with Tom and Inez are like gems that I can look at from time to time, something that they have left to me. Thanks friends. - Posted by: Nick Dubeski (friend) on: Oct 18, 2021

  • To Val and Doug and family, and extended Tataryn family. It has been many years since we have been in touch, but still check out the house on the curve whenever travelling to Selkirk. Spent many hours there with Val and friends and family while staying with my Grandmother down the road.
