GEORGE ALAN MATHESON

He also leaves to mourn his passing, Karen's son Wayne (Grace), daughters, Suzanne (Vern) and Joanna; grandchildren, Ashley, Alexandra (Sheldon), Mack, Tyler, Daniel (Keesha), and great-grandchildren, Tyla, Lincoln, MacKenzie and Jack. We remember the wonderful way he embraced them as his own over the past 27 years he shared our lives.
He also leaves his sister Ruth Nichol of Edmonton, many nieces, nephews, and numerous lifelong friends. Alan was predeceased by his sister Marion, brother-in-law Andy Marshall, his brother Gordon, sister-in-law Marion Matheson, his brother-in-law Jack Nichol, and grandson Marc Bacon.
Alan was the youngest of four children born to Henry and Helen Matheson on the "Matheson Farm" in Coningsby, Erin Township, Wellington County, Ontario, (land originally homesteaded around 1850 by his great-grandfather Adam Matheson). His formative school years were spent attending Coningsby School where he completed eight grades in six years, Matriculated at Guelph Collegiate and went on to the Ontario Agricultural College to obtain a BA. He later earned a Masters of Agricultural Economics from University of Manitoba and subsequently a Master of Business Administration from the University of Minnesota. Alan thoroughly enjoyed his career with Manitoba Agriculture as well as his 20 years with Agri Foods Canada and his many colleagues there.
In 1993, Al re-kindled his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Karen Farn. They were married in 1997. Their favourite times were spent with family and friends and often travelled to Texas to be with Wayne and Grace. They enjoyed some winter months in Florida where Alan, a fan of both the Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins, would take any opportunity to see them at Spring Training.
Al was a grateful sober member of AA for over 40 years. His firm belief in their program was passed on to many others over the years. He and Karen were also longstanding members of Immanuel United Church where they shared their faith and many friendships.
Al's family would like to thank the caring staff at Kildonan Personal Care Home for their services while there.
A celebration of Alan's life will take place in the new year.
The family asks, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to a charity of your choice or to Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie St., Winnipeg, Manitoba R2K 2V4.
Alan, Pop, Grandpa, Papa -
you have been such a blessing to us all.
