RICHARD CONRAD BATENCHUK
October 26, 1944 - October 26, 2021

On October 26, 2021 at his residence in West St. Paul, MB, Richard Batenchuk at the age of 77 years passed away with his loving wife Linda by his side.
He also leaves behind his children, Rick (Vicky) Batenchuk, Sheila (Barry) Pennell, Sheryl (Brent) Wilford, and Trevor (Jacquie) Batenchuk; grandchildren: Olivia, Sophia and Jackson; Rianna, Julia and Cameron; Vanessa and Bridget; and Chase and Oakland. He is survived by his sisters, Jeanette Franz, Kathy (Dennis) Rudney; and brother David Batenchuk; sisters-in-law, Florence, and Bernadine; along with many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Doris Batenchuk; brothers-in-law, Gerald, Ronald and Douglas; sister-in-law Margaret.
Richard was born in Winnipeg, grew up in the farming community of Vidir, MB. As a young man he moved to Winnipeg, where he started to work his various jobs. While in Winnipeg he met the love of his life Linda. Married in 1969, they raised a family of four, primarily in West St. Paul. Lister Rapids was not only home for Richard, but a place enriched with great friends. Filled with many neighbourhood get-togethers, spending time visiting, playing cards, and sharing laughs.
Richard was one of the hardest working men that we know, and one that his family could not be prouder of. He had an entrepreneur spirit and was an owner operator of many small businesses. A gas station, taxi business and a body shop were a demonstration of this spirit. Later, he worked many years at CP Railway, retired and furthered a career at West St. Paul Municipality. A passion for Richard was always being in a garage, he often could be found working on car repairs or doing body work. His love for classic cars and rebuilding them from the ground up continued well into retirement. His pride and pleasure, a 1964 Chevrolet Malibu, was one of the favourites that he rebuilt that we couldn't be more pleased with.
Richard's grit and determination to complete a job cannot be understated. When a job needed to be done, a vehicle needing to be fixed or a home project to be completed. He was there and it needed to be done now. His sense of urgency and drive to finish a task was impeccable. These life lessons were admirable and passed on. Your kids could not be prouder learning these lessons and they will live on. Richard's love and patience for his many grandchildren was something that was cherished and will not be forgotten.
Richard passed on October 26, 2021, his 77th trip around the sun. This day was not only his birthday but the day he completed his journey. A special phenomenon for an incredible man.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, MB. Proof of vaccination will be required. For those who cannot attend, a livestream for the service will be available via the link on his obituary at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com.

  • My sincerest condolences to the entire Batenchuk family. Take solace in knowing that Richard was one of the "Good ones". Growing up in the same neighbourhood with the Batenchuk's allowed our families to make lifelong friendships and become as close as neighbours can get, without being family. Richard was a straight shooter, smiling, and always kind, but with that parental authority, that you always respected. We had many conversations and laughs when the "crew" would come over to play cards at my parents house. I will always have fond memories of him. May God Bless Richard and rest in peace! - Posted by: Vernon Rybuck (Friend of the family) on: Nov 01, 2021
