HAZEL BOCHINSKI
(CALDER)
November 24, 1942 - October 21, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce that Hazel has passed after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Hazel had many diverse professions during her lifetime, one of her many unique accomplishments was becoming the first female horse trainer to win the Winnipeg Futurity in 1989 when she saddled Pick Sure. Hazel had much success training horses for 15 years but by far her greatest gift was her kindness to all (including the horses) and her love of her family and friends.
She touched many lives in a very positive and profound way, she will be deeply missed by all her family and friends
A small service will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I was saddened to hear of Hazel’s passing. She and I linked up as we were both researching our Craig ancestors. Her mother was my father’s first cousin. I would always receive a great letter at Christmas time giving me a update on her life. She put up a great fight against cancer. - Posted by: Joanne Packham (Cousin) on: Nov 25, 2021

  • Very sad to read that Hazel passed away. She was a great person who helped anyone in need. Many years ago Hazel arranged for our family to buy a retiring race horse for our 9 year old daughter to ride. We bought the horse and Hazel thought we should run him one more time. He won with Brian Bochinski riding. The horse lived with us for over 30 years. Hazel would check up on him every now and then. She was always looking out for other people. Hazel was honest and kind to all. We were very fortunate to know her. Bill and Shelley Drew - Posted by: Bill and Shellley Drew (Friends) on: Nov 06, 2021

  • Condolences to members of her family. Hazel trained our thoroughbreds for many years and her patience and understanding led to awards and rewards of the winner's circle on many occasions. Blessings to all. The Doe-Ridge Family Stable - Posted by: Fred Doern (cousin) on: Nov 01, 2021

  • Hazel was a huge part of racing at Assiniboia Downs. She was a very good trainer, loved and cared for the horses in her care, she was a wonderful employer to her employees. She was a strong advocate and support for many on the backstretch, helping so many throughout the years. Board member on the HBPA. Downs Children Daycare. Steward And I'm sure a few other things that I don't know. What ever problem/ issues on the Back Stretch you could be sure that Hazel was the first to step up the plate and be there to help!! Assiniboia Downs lost a very unique and compassionate, transparent individual when she left. She was well respected in everything she did in the Horse Racing Industry. She will be truly missed!! - Posted by: Leona Stahl (Friend) on: Oct 31, 2021
