It is with tremendous sadness that the family of John "Johann Baptist" Peterer announces his sudden passing at home on November 12, 2021. He was loved and cherished by his wife of 52 years, Lois; his daughters, Janey (Greg) and Nicole (Merritt); and his beloved grandchildren, Grace, Joshua, Brady, and Max. He was born in Appenzell, Switzerland on June 12, 1940 and immigrated to Canada in 1965.
He is survived by nine of his siblings in Switzerland and their families, as well as his wife's siblings and their families here in Canada. John was predeceased by his mother Therese, his father Jakob, and his eldest brother.
He trained as a chef in Switzerland and built a career in the culinary arts in both countries. John's fondest memories were spending time with his family at Betula Lake.
His hard work and attention to detail was reflected in everything he did.
John's impact on his family and friends is lasting and profound. We will miss him dearly.

Rest in peace, John, and may
light perpetual shine upon you.

  • It is a very, very sad piece of news to find out that John Peterer has passed away. What a lovely man, tremendous chef, and person with a big heart, not to mention a twinkle in his eye, and a general love of people, and a hard worker, and a ready smile, and most importantly of all a friend to many. I had the pleasure of being one of his kitchen assistants for years, at our shared parish…..with the putting on of huge, fabulous meals dreamed up and executed by John. Never was such hard work, so much fun!! My grandchildren notice to this day, that I always cut our carrots up into very little sticks 2.5 inches long. Why do you cut carrots like that gramma and not in the usual “coins”? Because my friend John taught me to do it that way. He taught us to care about presentation. I learned much else from him. This comes with much love and my condolences for you Lois and Janey and Nicole. - Posted by: Catherine Lee (Friend) on: Dec 09, 2021

  • It was a pleasure working with John at RRC. Although I wasn’t a staff member, I had many wonderful culinary experiences with John as a fellow chef. His Swiss attention to detail made him an exceptional culinary teacher!! I know that his students benefitted from his vast culinary knowledge! One thing he said to me was “people eat corn here, in Switzerland we feed our pigs corn“!! May John Rest In Peace! God Bless🙏🏼 - Posted by: Raymond B.
