CONSTANCA MARIA MAGALHAES

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the sudden passing of Constança (Connie) Magalhaes on November 15, 2021, in Winnipeg, at the age of 71.
Above all things, Connie valued family. She was a dedicated wife of 49 years to Luis. A devoted mother, she instilled her exemplary courage and strength in her daughters, Ana (Ian), Cristina (Russ), Guida (Joel), Luisa (Mark) and Connie (Shawn). Fiercely loved and affectionately known as Avo by her grandchildren, Aiden, Riley, Meaghan, Téa, Keenan, Kyla, Owen, Jonty, Adriana, Gabriela, Will, Violet and Catarina, she shone so brightly in their company. Predeceased by her parents, Maria Teresa and Joao Figueiredo; she leaves behind her younger siblings, Jao and Pedro (Ana); nieces, nephews, and many relatives and friends.
Born in Portugal, raised in Mozambique, and settled in Winnipeg, Connie generously shared her time with her community. A Girl Guide leader for decades, a well-loved and gifted teacher at the University of Manitoba, an avid volunteer at Folklarama and St. Mary's Academy, and most recently, a loved friend and leader at South Park Estates, she will be so very missed.
To the very end, Connie selflessly tended to the needs of others above her own, fulfilling her commitment to the service of God.
May she rest in eternal peace in the company of the angels and the Blessed Virgin Mary to whom she looked to for strength during life's great challenges.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mary, Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg, Tuesday, November 23, 2:00 p.m. Proof of vaccination and masks required. Please note that there is limited space available at the church. 65 spaces will be available to guests, on a first-come basis.

  • It was with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of Constanca. We had known her for many years since the time when all of our children were quite young. During our visit to Portugal a number of years ago she graciously opened her home to us and kindly took us to visit many of the important sites across the country. Though our now being out of the country prevents us from paying our last respects in person, Tai Tai and her family are very much in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Joan & Mike Saxton (Friends ) on: Nov 23, 2021

  • It was with deep sadness that we learned of Constança's death. We remember Constança as a caring, selfless, charismatic, intelligent and dedicated person: one who was loved and admired by everyone who knew her. Our thoughts and prayers are with Luis, her husband, with her daughters Ana Teresa, Cristina, Guida, Luisa and Connie, and with the rest of the bereaved family during this time of sorrow. Rest in peace, Constança! - Posted by: Elvira, Fátima and Carlos Mota (Friends) on: Nov 22, 2021

  • I had the privilege of knowing Connie through her work as a Sessional Instructor in the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology at the University of Manitoba. I respected her very much and admired her work ethic and the students she taught had great respect for her also. She always went above and beyond to help her students when they came to talk to her. She was a very valuable member of the department. I enjoyed chats over coffee with Connie. She will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Pat Parish (Friend and Co-worker (University of Manitoba)) on: Nov 22, 2021

  • I actually didn't know Constanca very well, but I do know of her involvements. I remember her when she was mayor of the Casa Do Minho pavilion at Folklorama and conversated with her briefly. I also know of her teachings at the U of M and raising strong daughters. Thoughts are with her family and friends. - Posted by: Jon Lewak (Acquaintance) on: Nov 21, 2021

  • Luis & family, We are shocked to learn the passing of Connie today. Since the pandemic, we missed the warm and friendly greetings of Luis & Connie who used to sit right behind us at the 9:00 mass. We are looking forward to seeing them again once pandemic is under control. We never expect this. She will be dearly missed. Our condolences to your family. We will keep Connie and your family in our prayers. Kevin Leung & Stella Ho - Posted by: Kevin Leung & Stella Ho (Friends from Mary, Mother of The Church ) on: Nov 21, 2021

  • We are so sorry to hear of Connie’s passing and offer our heartfelt condolences to you Louis and family. A couple of times a year before Covid, we as couples always enjoyed meeting for breakfast, sharing pictures and stories of trips and families. She also shared with us her annual reflections of their activities in the previous year. Connie was a caring, and gentle spirit that seemed to have no bounds. We continually updated our schedule to visit again but unfortunately Covid continued to disrupt these attempts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. • Dear Luis, your family and many loved ones. Connie has consistently been a breath of fresh air and model of love. Her enthusiasm and support for all happening in our parish was one of the first things I noticed as a new parishioner. Sadly Covid has kept us far apart but forever close in our hearts. May her memory bring you great solace and peace during this very difficult time. ❤️ - Posted by: Nancy McAvoy Gajdosik (Fellow ‘congregant’ at our beloved Parish, Mary Mother of the Church ) on: Nov 20, 2021

  • Luis and family I was shocked to hear about Connie’s passing as I had just received a nice card from her after my husband’s recent death. I have many happy memories of our times in girl guides camping, travelling to Guelph, and spending time with our daughters.
