BERNICE MARILYN EAKIN
March 15, 1931 - November 15, 2021
Mom lived with dementia for the last three years but it did not change her loving personality, compassion and contentment. Mom lived a full, happy life with her soul mate, love of her life and best friend - her husband George - who predeceased her in 2010. Mom was also predeceased by her parents, Marjorie and Earl Charman and stepfather Claude Charman, in-laws, Hugh and Ethel Eakin, sister Elaine Lobson, brother Garry Charman, brothers-in-law, Erv Lobson, Hugh Eakin, Robert Eakin, Jack Eakin, sisters-in-law, Beryl Eakin, Violet Eakin and nephew Jason Charman.
Mom is survived by her daughter Lori (Chris) Stevens, sons, Grant (Paula) Eakin, and Bruce (Susan) Eakin and Myrna Eakin and Trish Eakin. Mom was also blessed with seven grandchildren, Matt (Randi) Stevens, Lisa (Mike) Krebs, Chelsea (Tad) Kroczak, Cassidy (Scott) Boyko, Cody (Hanna) Eakin, Taylor (Gabby) Eakin and Myles Eakin and 10 great-grandchildren, Briar, Mason and Jag Stevens, Everly and Barrett Krebs, Madden, Lincoln and Sawyer Kroczak, Bowie Boyko and Fjola Eakin. Mom is also survived by her brother Brian (Janice) Charman and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mom was born in Winnipeg and lived her early years in Norwood making lasting friendships. Grand Beach played a huge part of Mom and Dad's courtship leading to marriage in 1952. St. James became their forever neighbourhood where life became a treasure for them both. Mom and Dad lived life well. They wintered in Texas for 25 years where they enjoyed all the activities and great friendships that Paradise Park offered. Some of the non-stop activities included costume parties, dances, golf, cards, and happy hours. The summers were spent at the family cottage at Westhawk Lake which was their favourite place to be amongst friends and family. Most evenings, Mom was "itching" for a rousing card game. Mom and Dad were also blessed with some great travel to Hawaii, California, Alaska, Mexico, and Germany just to name a few.
Mom and Dad were avid bridge and card players and had a special group of friends to gather with for dinner parties, cards and games.
Our parents were always there and supported us no matter what. Mom was the glue that kept us all organized and ready for everything. For many years, we would go on family road trips during spring break. We would venture south for some sun or various locations throughout Canada for hockey tournaments. They packed us all up in the car, hit the road, hope we did not get tired of the 'eye spy' game and that nobody sat in his or her space by the time we left Winnipeg. We will never forget the road trip to Mexico. Very long, however full of amazing memories. Mom liked to sew, and would often make special Barbie doll outfits back in the day, and create beautifully handcrafted ceramics that were gifted to family members. Mom was also a pro at making 'fancy' sandwiches with the 'gals' for all the bridal showers and friend's funerals. She loved to cook, bake, read, and watch sports - especially hockey, football and curling. Entertaining was always a pleasure and she welcomed the opportunity to share with friends and family. Mom also loved to garden and took great pride in her home and lake plantings. Red geraniums were her favourite. Mom loved to tell jokes - but not so well! She could either not remember the joke, or the punchline, and we laughed just as hard as she was laughing trying to remember it. In spite of some 50 plus years at the lake, Mom never learned how to drive a boat! Our cottage can only be accessed by water so driving a boat was a necessity. One day, much to our surprise, she drove the boat alone, to pick a few of us up at the landing. Not sure how she ever did that! A mystery and a memory!
Mom was always 'put together'! She loved pastels and matched her earrings and necklace to her outfits and always had to have her lipstick on. She was always very positive, caring, and loving. She was warm and welcoming to be around and often used the word 'Love' to address family members. Mom and Dad's greatest treasures that brought immense joy to their life were their kids and grandchildren. They beamed from ear to ear. She was often described to us as a 'lovely lady'! That she was!
Life Isn't Forever, But Love is.
