NELSON SCRIBE SR.
On August 5, 1924, Nelson Scribe Sr. was born on the homestead of his parents, Katherine and William Scribe, in Norway House, Manitoba.
Nelson was the third eldest of five children, Murdock, Ella, Mordina, and Donald.
As a child, Nelson attended day school and assisted his family by hunting, trapping, and fishing alongside his grandfather, James Scribe. During his fourth grade, Nelson left school to begin what would become a 85 year career.
In 1946, he met his beautiful and loving wife, Lillian Ross. In 73 years of marriage, the two were blessed with eight daughters and six sons. With great sadness, two sons departed during Nelson's lifetime.
In his lifetime, Nelson provided for his family as a hunter, trapper, commercial fisherman, politician, and lab technician. In all of his professional pursuits, Nelson was recognized by his peers, colleagues, and the wider community as a skilled and gifted leader who was guided by steadfast integrity. He received numerous accolades and presented his work internationally.
Nelson advocated for environmental stewardship and championed Indigenous rights in his professional and personal life.
Nelson never really retired. As an elder, he continued to maintain his homestead and mentor his children, grandchildren, and community members on sustainable conservation and Indigenous rights.
His life is a testimony to his love for his family, his people, and the land.

I first met Nelson a couple of years after marrying his daughter Donna. We made a trip from Edmonton to Norway House so I could meet the family. I was welcomed warmly by Nelson. He told me stories of his life trapping, fishing and hunting. This man loved his way of life and above all his family. He was about 70 years old at the time and took me out to Playgreen Lake to show me some of his trapping area and the lands he loved. He would talk to the bears and they would never bother him. I met Nelson in Thompson at the fur tables. I was representing North American Fur Auctions and Nelson was looking for his best options to sell his pelts. His fur was always very well handled and brought top prices on the fur auctions. Nelson was a well respected trapper in the north and when he spoke everyone listened. He was the first indigenous board member of the Wild Fur Council, a group of wild fur producers with an ownership position in North American Fur Auctions, where he earned the respect of trappers across Canada and the United States.
