SHANNON NEIL HIRSCH
April 16, 1958 - December 4, 2021

The family is very sad to announce Shannon's sudden and premature passing in Tsawwassen, BC, at the age of 63.
Shannon is survived by his dear children, Max and Maya; his siblings, Molly Hirsch (Eric Elkin), Esther Hirsch (Marvin Bernstein), Lillian Hirsch (David Friedman), Jeff Hirsch (Liz Murray); his nieces and nephews, Nina Elkin (Jason Taller) and their daughter Ruthie, Ben Elkin (Natalie Levine) and their children Hattie and Miles, Jonathan Bernstein (Anita Zagorski) and their children Brooke and Paige, Abby Friedman (Scott Porath) and their son Evan, Alanna Friedman, Davis Hirsch, many cousins, and a multitude of friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Max and Tonia Hirsch, and his beloved wife Georgia Rumball in 2016.
It is so very hard to capture Shannon in a few words - he was larger than life. Outwardly tough, those who got to know him quickly learned how sensitive and kind-hearted he truly was.
He was gregarious and fierce, stubborn and loving, profane and gentle, and above all else, devoted to his family and friends. One could not find a more loyal and steadfast friend. In a time of crisis, there was no one better. He instantly made friends with everyone he met.
Everybody ate when they came to his house. Shannon was known to all as an amazing cook and social host. Check your phone - you probably have some photos of Shannon's cooking sent by the chef himself.
He had a lifelong love of animals. His dog Whiskey was his great companion. Millie the cat was a close second.
He was taken from all of us much too soon and he will be sorely missed.
There will be a graveside service at Bnay Abraham Cemetery, 4639 Main Street, West Saint Paul on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. The service will be livestreamed and may be accessed at:

In light of the pandemic, there will not be a shiva or a meal of condolence.
For those wishing to make a donation in Shannon's memory, please consider a local Humane Society, animal shelter or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • Shannon was a close friend. We were friends before he lived across the street from me on Niagara. I am so sad to learn of his passing. Sincerely. - Posted by: Bob Sampson (Friend) on: Jun 11, 2023

  • Truly sad and grieving. All the great personality he seams to have had early in life he maintained. Big hearted, gregarious laugh, playful, offering help at all times, chatty, story teller with a bit of angst. So proud of his kids..spent many hours Sunday morning soccer pitch watching Maya. Cheering her on. Proud of Max and his achievements. Will miss you good friend. - Posted by: Mario (Late in life friend) on: Dec 20, 2021

  • I just heard that Shannon died. I was part of a group of kids who visited each other, going back and forth from Winnipeg and the Twin Cities circa 1976. Shannon was one of the nicest guys and I'm sorry I didn't know him past the age of 18. I'm not surprised to see all the tributes to him and to hear what a wonderful person he turned out to be. - Posted by: Debra Grossfield (very very old friend - out of touch) on: Dec 16, 2021

  • It seems to me I have always known Shannon. Firstly as teenagers in Winnipeg, he teased me mercilessly and where we belonged to same community of holocaust survivors who loved their children and each other’s children deeply. I lost touch as our lives became busy with work and family for a while but I have been blessed to have Shannon in my life nearly daily for the past five year. We bonded over our fur babies, baking and cooking and the love for our children. If you were lucky enough to be his friend then you had unconditional love, laughter and someone who really deeply cared about you. I am heartbroken, he is irreplaceable in my life. I am sending my love to his family, I am deeply sorry for your loss and wish you all a long life. - Posted by: Lana Lipkowitz (Friend) on: Dec 12, 2021

  • I have not seen Shannon in many years. I remember him well from school with Dave Katz and Steve Raber. He was larger than life back then. So sorry for your loss...way too soon ... - Posted by: Cohen Rick (School mate) on: Dec 12, 2021

  • We both have such fond memories of being in the Hirsch household and spending much of our early twenties with Shannon and the gang. Our hope is that the loving, kind words spoken of Shannon, will comfort his children and family as they grieve his untimely loss. May his memory be for a blessing. Love, Sherri and Lisa - Posted by: Sherri +Lisa (Old friends ) on: Dec 12, 2021

  • A wonderful, caring, and loyal friend. I will miss our hours of time on the telephone line. I will carry him in my heart. My condolences to the family who he loved so much. - Posted by: Colleen Cohen (Friend) on: Dec 12, 2021

  • I met Shannon when he started to sell windsurfing boards/equipment out of the specialty running store I worked at - Phidippides; on the corner of Stafford and Grosvenor. The entire store lit up when he walked in! Shannon worked hard, laughed hard, and helped hard. He was truly a joy to have around the work-place. My deepest condolences to all of you. - Posted by: Debbie Isaacs (Work colleague) on: Dec 12, 2021

  • Shannon was one of my closest friends from our early years at Talmud Torah thru our teen years. We got into all sorts of trouble and had lots of fun. He was a wonderful friend that could always be counted on for anything. May his memory always be for a Blessing. - Posted by: Jeff Lowenstein (Friend) on: Dec 11, 2021

  • Shannon and I became friends through windsurfing and our friendship continued long after we had put away our boards. Most recently Shannon would just call out of the blue for a kibbutz and it would always brighten my day and I will miss that - Posted by: David Halprin (Friend ) on: Dec 09, 2021

  • My deepest sympathies go to Maya, Max and the rest of Shannon’s family at this very sad time. Shannon was an amazing person. I met him over forty years ago in Winnipeg when he and I were part of the Windsurfing community there. There never was a person that could make me laugh harder, or think harder, than Shannon. His was tough as nails, but his compassion and empathy were boundless. He was bigger than life, and a true joy to experience. I am truly blessed to have known Shannon, and a better person for it. - Posted by: Bern Roy (Friend) on: Dec 09, 2021
