SOONG DON MAR
1937 - 2021
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Han Fong; children, Garry, Phelan, Sharah (Zach) and grandsons, Daisen and Dorian.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Yen Shong and Fee Quien Mah and his daughter Sophia.
Soong Don was born in Canton, China in 1937 and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in the 1950s. Don worked in the restaurant and hotel industry for many years. He always found the time to do things that brought him joy. Whether it was gardening, carpentry, to building unique kites and flying them, Don enjoyed working with his hands. An avid storyteller, he shared many stories about his life and work travels as a cook on the CN railways. Don was kind to animals and an excellent Chinese calligrapher. He was devoted to his family and was proud of his children.
We would like to thank the physicians and nurses at Grace Hospital for their care of Don during his final stay.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2021 at Bardal Funeral Home. Please RSVP to 204-837-1685 to attend.

I went to U of M Engineering with his son Garry in the 80's. We were friends and when I visited his house his father was a nice friendly person. I have not seen Garry for many years and I hope he is well. God Bless. MM - Posted by: michael mark (friend of Son Garry) on: Dec 15, 2021

Don is a nice and kindhearted man. Don and Fanny was like our "weekend parents" because we spent so much time at work and interacted with them a lot. Condolences to his family and sending peace, serenity in this difficult time. - Posted by: Razel Mar (co-worker at The International Inn) on: Dec 12, 2021

Mr. Mar and the Mar family have been a cornerstone on the street and in the community where I grew up. The neighbourhood will be changed by Mr. Mar's passing. Every year, on Christmas Eve day, Mr. Mar would ring the door bell at my parents' place with a gift of a tin of cookies. That gesture will always be part of my memories of the season. To the Mar family, with love, my condolences on the loss of your husband, father, grandfather. He was a sweet man. - Posted by: Shannon Coyston (A past neighbour.) on: Dec 12, 2021
