CARMELO (CAM) AIELLO
April 1, 1928 December 2, 2021
Carmelo is survived by his wife of 66 years, Paolina, son Raffaele, daughter Cathy (Murray), grandchildren, Beau (Brandi), Cameron, Rebecca (Danny), Claire (Austin), Joseph and great-granddaughters, Malone and Clarke Wilks. He was predeceased by his parents, Raffaele and Caterina, brothers, Guiseppe, Andrea, Francesco and sisters, Maria and Carmela, as well as daughter-in-law Linda Parker.
Carmelo was born on April 1, 1928 in Amato, Italy and came to Canada in February 1950 at the age of 21 years. He married Paolina in 1955 and settled in the West End of Winnipeg to raise their family. Carmelo sponsored his brothers-in-law and brothers to Canada to give their families an opportunity for a better life and eventually was able to convince his parents to move to Canada to be with all their children and grandchildren.
He was a family man first and was always there to help and offer guidance whenever asked of him. He was always referred to as a good man who was liked by all and very loved by his family and friends. He especially enjoyed making wine and sharing his plentiful garden of fresh vegetables with everyone. Carmelo and Paolina enjoyed a rich social life travelling to warm destinations with family and friends and being actively involved in the Amatese Club. His greatest pleasures were spending time with his children and grandchildren sitting around the table telling stories of his youth and listening to them share their adventures with him and Nonna. Sunday pasta was always a highlight with all the grandchildren's favourites being served and Nonno telling them to "shovel in". He also loved his time at the cottage in Gimli where many happy memories were created and good times were shared. Nonno and Nonna's door was always open, whether it was the house or cottage everyone was welcome and enjoyed the delicious food and company.
Carmelo worked for the CNR as a machinist for 38 years and was very proud to have a job he loved and that provided his family with a comfortable lifestyle. He was always present for all those around him and would say what a lucky man he was to have lived such a fulfilling life and have the riches of great family and friends. We are going to miss him and reminisce about all the funny stories and great times we shared as a family. We find comfort in knowing he is with all his loved ones and that we had the opportunity to be with him as he left this world.
A family Funeral Mass took place on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Holy Rosary Church, with entombment in the Queen of Heaven Mausoleum at Assumption Cemetery.
We would like to thank the staff at Calvary Place who took the greatest care of our dad over the last few years, as well as our family and friends for their prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.
