VELMA LUCILE MAGNUSON
(nee MOHR)
December 3, 1924 - December 22, 2021
She is lovingly remembered by her son Wayne (Joyce), daughter Lynda, and daughter Valerie (Robert Grant), grandchildren, Tricia, Richard (Cindy), Blake (Danielle), Brian (Anna), great-grandchildren, Liam, Brody, Andre', Oscar, Edwin, and many nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Oscar in 2009, her parents, William and Minnie Mohr, three brothers and nine sisters. Mom was the last surviving of her siblings. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Fred Peterson.
Velma was born in Carrot River, Saskatchewan in 1924, and moved with her family to Flin Flon in her early years. After spending time in the military during the Second World War, Mom met Oscar in Winnipeg after he returned from the War in Europe. They were married on March 29, 1946. Soon after, they bought a farm in Riverland, and raised their family there until moving to Winnipeg in the early 1960s. When the family had grown up, Mom went to work at Deer Lodge Hospital as a nurses aide.
Retirement brought them back to Lac Du Bonnet, and they bought a property along the Winnipeg River. They later moved to Lac Du Bonnet into Park Manor, and Mom moved to Sterling House in Winnipeg after Dad had passed away. When Mom's health started to fail her, and at the age of 95, she went to live with her daughter Lynda in Vancouver.
Mom was active at the Pioneer Club in Lac Du Bonnet, participating in floor curling, bowling, cribbage, and other functions. She enjoyed playing cribbage and managed to beat us at it frequently. (Of course, we had to overlook the fact that she would sometimes count her hand twice in the same round.) She was also an active member of the Canadian Legion in Lac Du Bonnet, and one of her greatest pleasures were the hours she spent volunteering at "Mrs. Lucci's", which supported not-for-profit community groups and organizations in Lac Du Bonnet. Mom was also a member of the original Lutheran Church in Riverland, and a charter member of "Lutheran Church of the Cross" in Lac Du Bonnet.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to any charity of your choice.
Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be held in Riverland at a later date.

I have known and loved Aunty Velma and Uncle Oscar all my life. I have been looking for her for the past 5 years and am so sad to hear of her passing without being able to see her. She was so full of love, she taught me embroidery and I grew up with Lynda, Brian and Valerie (please contact me-email above). They are both a huge loss for my memories. Please let me know the date of the Riverland service. Aunty Velma was a very special lady to me-with love-Judy - Posted by: JUDY WINTERS (NIECE) on: Dec 31, 2021

Our sincere condolences. Oscar & Velma we’re dear friends of my grandmother Klara Ormshaw. They were very kind. She enjoyed her times with them attending many events in the Riverland & Lac Du Bonnet area. After my grandmother’s vision failed Velma would read & reread a letter I wrote to my grandmother and for that I am always thankful. Rest easy. - Posted by: Karen Froese (acquaintance ) on: Dec 31, 2021
