VERN ARTHUR DYCK
October 22, 1935 - December 31, 2021
Vern was born on October 22, 1935, in Winnipeg. At 16 he captured the heart of Esther Janzen and they married in 1956, and had five children - Herb, Gerry, Jim, Jennifer, and Jane. Vern loved camping, hunting, and traveling, and his wife and children where constant companions.
Although he started working in his father's business, Dyck's Containers and Forest Products, Vern ventured out on his own and started Springhill Lumber Ltd. For 40 years he built a thriving company which built homes for Indigenous communities in Manitoba and Northern Ontario. He took great pride in flying up North, with his plane, a Beachcraft Barron, to visit his customers and develop personal relationships with them.
Throughout his life, Vern was also a very generous man; whether it be a hockey team that needed jerseys, children who wanted a summer camp experience, widows and orphans in Haiti, or the myriad of friends, family or strangers who needed a helping hand, Vern showed God's love to all.
We are grateful for the many good memories to hold onto. Vern was a lover of history, nature, especially birds (but not cats), travelling and most importantly adventure.
Vern is survived by his wife Esther, his children, and their spouses, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, the ninth arriving any day now.
The family would like to thank all the staff on the fifth floor of Actionmarguerite Saint-Boniface for their faithful and compassionate care of Vern during his nine years in residence. They contributed greatly to his quality of life and provided excellent care of which we are truly thankful.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street. Proof of vaccination is required. The service will be livestreamed and may be watched at https://funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/43480 .

Dear Esther We did not know Vern as he was in care before we came to know you less than four years ago. But we probably met Vern when we shopped at Springfield Lumber when we lived in North Kildonan. As we greet you this Holiday Season, we share with you the words of the Christmas Angel, "For to you is born today in the city of David, a saviour who is Christ the Lord." There is no greater comfort than knowing we have a saviour. God bless you and your family. Don and Donna (306) - Posted by: Don and Donna Engel (neighbours) on: Jan 08, 2022

I remember when we moved NK in 1960 and got to know our neighbours. Esther and Vern Dyck were always kind to myself and my twin sisters Carla and Sandra were very young. When our house burnt down on Irving Place, they got the neighbours together to help my mom and dad get back on their feet. When my younger sister Carla was very ill this family was a lifeline to my mom Susie and dad Albert. Esther spent many days visiting our mom who was home bound due to my sister’s illness. I thank Esther and Vern for their many kindnesses to our family. - Posted by: Karin Lade Jollimore (Neighbours and childhood friends of Herbie an Jerry from 1960-67) on: Jan 08, 2022

John and Violet offer condolences on Vern’s passing and your loss. Vern and Esther were friends of ours for many years and we shared many experiences together. We planted trees together at our homes in the Oakbank area in the early years and the Dyck’s had the most beautiful yard. We travelled together to Mexico many times in the 70s where we are again now as we reflect on those years, fished together and even rode out a few earthquakes. Vern was a great customer of ours at Kitchencraft and he always enjoyed driving down the price and we enjoyed taking the order when we finally settled . We learned a lot from Vern, especially the new adventures that he pushed us into. We bless you with the peace of God knowing that Vern was ready to meet his Lord. - Posted by: John and Violet Rademaker (Friends ) on: Jan 08, 2022

My condolences to Esther and the family on Vern's passing. I worked with Vern for a substantial amount of years at Springhill Lumber and I have many fond memories of him. He was like the energizer bunny - always on the go and full of energy and in a constant state of motion. He loved his work and what he did and it showed in the vast amount of friendships and connections he made over the years. My condolences. - Posted by: Dwayne Muth (Past Employee) on: Jan 06, 2022

Vern was a friend and a valued customer of mine as I serviced his aircraft for many years. Christmas always saw him flying up North with Santa (The late Charlie Harper) to Northern communities with gifts for children and Turkeys for families. He created many memories and opportunities for pilots as they transitioned from low time up and into the airlines. I'm quite sure Harland Sanders will be the first person to greet him when he gets to heaven. - Posted by: Hartley Dueck (Friend) on: Jan 06, 2022
