DOUGLAS JOHN CHRISTIE
May 22, 1951 - December 16, 2021
Doug died suddenly and peacefully while napping in his favourite chair.
Doug is survived by his wife of 40 years, Cathy (Grenon), his children, Trevor (Hilary), Karen (Mike) and Brett (Morgan), his grandchildren, Quinn, Reed, Camryn and Keira, his brother Grant (Angie), his mother-in-law Joan Grenon, eight in-laws and spouses and 24 nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, John (Jack) and Lillian, brothers, Allan and Ron (Joanne), and his father-in-law John Grenon.
Doug grew up in East Kildonan, the eldest of the four Christie boys. The family enjoyed time together at their Otter Falls cottage. He was an avid athlete. His passions included curling, golf, softball, hockey, and he was a particularly accomplished water polo player, rising to the ranks of Team Canada.
Doug was a local pioneer in the field of physiotherapy. After graduating in 1978 he became a partner in the first privately owned physiotherapy clinic in Winnipeg. In 1982 he opened Doug Christie Physiotherapy on Tache Avenue where he continued to provide care to patients until his death.
Doug travelled adventurously. He toured many of the far reaches of the world with his family before focusing his vacation time in Phoenix. He welcomed many friends and family to Phoenix during the past 10 years.
Doug was a generous volunteer. He coached Special Olympics swimmers, donated much time to the Y's men service club, and volunteered medical support to numerous international sporting events, to name a few.
For Doug, friends were extremely important. Among the most enduring friendships were those with the members of the Supper Club and with fellow golfers at Rossmere Country Club.
Doug was outgoing, charismatic, and embraced life enthusiastically. He cherished his friends, sports, travel, his charitable causes, his work/calling as a physiotherapist, but loved and prized his family above all. Family time topped everything. Doug is going to miss watching his kids and grandkids grow up. And the family will sure miss him.
Should you wish to donate in Doug's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice, the family thanks you.
There will be a celebration of Doug's life when Covid restrictions allow. And know that Doug would immensely enjoy entertaining his friends!

When I said to Doug, “see ya later” after golf back in December in Mesa, I did not know it would be the last time I’d say that to him. He had squeezed in one more round before heading home . It was a good day. He was happy that he was going home to see his family . Cathy, I’m so sorry that life has been so cruel to have snapped Doug away from you. My deepest sympathies To me, Doug was a real gentleman, kind and polite , and sincere, Soft spoken. Always a hi, how are you, good to see you. Rossmere and I will miss him. - Posted by: kathy slezak (Friend) on: Apr 25, 2022

Doug was one of those very special people that left an indelible mark on your life, both as a trusted physiotherapist and true friend. I will forever remember his kindness, and hearing his cherished stories of birdwatching in Arizona with his granddaughter. Our sincere condolences on the much too early loss of this wonderful human being. - Posted by: Beverley Sawchuk & David Laird (Patients ) on: Mar 11, 2022

Doug was a good friend who always could be counted on. His contagious smile and chuckle could lighten up any mood. A frequent golf partner, Doug’s “Popeye” strength was always impressive. His pride in changing his golf swing after some lessons in California was met with “Doug, why are you messing with a good thing!” Doug’s reputation as a physiotherapist was unparalleled. Getting up at 5:30 am for his 6:00 patients was a daily occurrence. He was able to train most of us with the “tens” machine and other routines that a joke was maybe we should be charging him! At our last dinner club Doug stayed longer than usual and expressed how much he had missed our dinners due to COVID restrictions. Doug, dinner club will never be the same without you. Leona and I would like to offer our deep condolences to Cathy and family. I know this will leave a massive hole in your family and hopefully over time his memory will help ease your pain. My condolences to the family and friends. My mom Ingrid worked with Doug during his St. Boniface Hospital days and she always spoke very fondly about him and his expertise. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Michelle (Daughter of co-worker) on: Jan 14, 2022

The Christie’s were neighbours of my parents a long time ago at Otter Falls. My children used to play with the younger Christie boys, Ron, Allan and Grant. In fact his parents used to take my youngest daughter Nancy with Grant as they were the same age to the Otter Falls restaurant for coffee and pie quite often in the evenings. One summer a long time ago my mom was on a floating mattress at the lake and she suddenly toppled over and did not come up. Dad not being a swimmer yelled and Doug heard him and rushed over. He performed Artificial respiration on her but she did not survive. I will always be thankful for him for being there and rushing to help. So sorry to hear of his passing and my condolences to his family. Sincerely Gail Foster (nee Sutton) - Posted by: Gail Foster (nee Sutton) (Otter Falls neighbour) on: Jan 11, 2022

My sincere condolences to Doug's family and his clients. Doug "saved my life" with his reassurance, support and genuine caring when I thought I was never going to recover from a back injury. Of course, his physiotherapy skills were second to none, but it was his positivity and listening skills that made the difference. I am so grateful to have known him. - Posted by: Kelly (former client) on: Jan 09, 2022

My sincere condolences to Cathy, Trevor, Karen and Brett. What a great man! So many fantastic memories of him coaching my kids (he was a great coach!), being a friend, going on vacation to Jamaica, and receiving treatment from the world's best physio. You will be missed Doug! Family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Debbie Tabin - Posted by: Debbie Tabin (Friend) on: Jan 08, 2022

While I haven't seen Doug for decades I truly remember great times together as kids growing up and attending Springfield Heights Elementary School. Doug, Ken Dunsmore and I were close in those years and had much fun together doing all the usual kids stuff. It wasn't unusual for the three of us to be together almost every hour that school was out. RIP Doug. - Posted by: Garry LEACH (Childhood friend) on: Jan 08, 2022

It’s been quite a few years since I’ve seen Doug as a patient. My condolences goes out to Cathy and the family. Doug was the only one to help me with my pain and discomfort. He was always smiling, kind and would remember our conversations. He also helped my father Henri years ago with his pain. He was a great guy. He will be sadly missed. Take care. - Posted by: Ginette Tremblay (Pelland) (Patient ) on: Jan 08, 2022

I met Doug after I was involved in a motorcycle accident in 1986. I spent a month in the St. Boniface Hospital, then I had my cast off after 4 months and hobbled into Doug Christie physiotherapy that same day. I was crying, upset about my leg, that was skinny & looked deformed. Doug took one look at me & said do you think it will always look like this? And I blubbered yes! And he said, we are going to fix you up & you will be back running races in no time! No one had given me that much hope before that meeting. From that day on I was on the mend. I saw Doug 3 times a week for a year. When I could run again he said well you are done now. I didn’t want to leave him! To this day I think about all the kindness he showed me & how he pretty much changed my life! He was one in a million. You meet a person like that once in your life. My condolences to his family. He will certainly be missed. - Posted by: Kerry (Patient) on: Jan 08, 2022
