(nee JACKSON)
March 16, 1932 - January 5, 2022


Shirley Richards, passed away peacefully at Misericordia Health Centre, at the age of 89 years.
Daughter Richards was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Shirley was the daughter of Vera, (nee Husbands), Jackson and John Jackson, a well respected Black Canadian Family. Her grandfather, B.A. Husbands was awarded the Order of the British Empire for public service from King George VI and received recognition from Pope XXIII and U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
Shirley married Frank Richards in Montreal, Quebec and was blessed with four children, Darrell, La Vern, Lynn and Bridget. She has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Shirley was predeceased by her sisters, Sylvia and Joan and brothers, Lenny and Cecil.
As a Canadian Armed Forces military wife for 30 years, Shirley lived in various provinces across Canada. Shirley and her late husband finally settled in Winnipeg and made their home in the West Kildonan community for 35 years.
Daughter Richards was both a homemaker and a career woman while raising her children. She graduated in 1978 from Success College in Winnipeg with a Diploma in Dictaphone Typing and Accounting. Shirley also completed a Medical Terminology and Anatomy course, leading a career in the medical field at the Winnipeg Clinic. She retired from the Clinic as an Office Supervisor in 1993.
Shirley held a position with Seven Day Food Stores responsible for the accounts, receivable, payable and payroll. She was also employed at Brinks in Regina, Saskatchewan responsible for managing and balancing millions of dollars in currency daily.
Daughter Richards joined the Elkdom, (I.B.P.U. Elks of the World), in 1979, holding the positions of Financial and Recording Secretary and Daughter Ruler. Shirley was also a member of the Mizpah Chapter #6, (Order of Eastern Stars), The Caribbean Seniors Organization, Congress of Black Woman of Canada and long time member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church.
Shirley was a 25+ year member of the Wellness Institute staying healthy with aquatic fitness. She was also active in yoga and Tai-Chi along with knitting for family and friends. Both Shirley and her husband of 60 years enjoyed their retirement with 10 ocean cruises, sight-seeing trips and visiting family throughout Canada, United States and other countries.
In accordance with Shirley's wishes, cremation and a private interment will take place. Also per her request, no public memorial service will be held.
Donations can be sent to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba in lieu of flowers.

  • Sending sincere condolences to you the family for the loss of your dear mother. I was a long time friend of your uncles CJ and Lenny. I often heard CJ speak of his sisters, and his visits to see them. I believe at one point I think I had met your mom on an occasion of her visit to Halifax.
