MARK WILLIAM NIEMAN
November 1, 1963 - December 31, 2021
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our much-loved husband, father, son, brother, and uncle on December 31, 2021, at 58 years of age.
Left to treasure his memory are his beloved wife of 31 years, the love of Mark's life, Lisa; his son Garrett and his daughter Lauren; his mother Charlene (Jarl Johner); sisters, Darcy (David) Cormack, Dawn (Lloyd) Piche; sisters-in-law Trish (Luis) Cabral, Marianne (Steve) Glufka; nieces and nephews, Hayden, Hunter, Kennedy, Tyler, Victoria, Rachel; many extended family and friends; and his two special pups, Lucy and Ruby.
Mark was predeceased by his father Ken, father-in-law Harold, mother-in-law Geraldine and his niece Kayleigh.
Mark was born in Fargo, North Dakota, moving with his parents to South Dakota and Illinois before making his permanent home in Winnipeg. Mark attended John Dafoe, and J. B. Mitchell Schools and later St. Paul's High School where he embraced life as a Crusader. Following graduation, Mark spent a year at Shattuck Preparatory College in Minnesota, before accepting a football scholarship to Bemidji State University where he eventually went on to play basketball and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Upon his return to Winnipeg is where he met and married, Lisa. There was nothing in this world that he loved more than his family - his beautiful wife Lisa and incredible children, Garrett and Lauren. They were his whole world.
Throughout Mark's life, sport played an important role; whether it was playing hockey and football at Sir John Franklin, or later as a player and coach at St. Paul's, sport was central to his life. He found great happiness coaching football for the St. Vital Mustangs and took great joy in being able to share this passion with his son Garrett. Mark would go on to coach varsity basketball at St. Mary's Academy which resulted in no shortage of comical anecdotes to be shared by his favourite player and daughter Lauren. He was affectionately known as "Coach Mark" in many circles.
Early in Mark's professional career he worked in the roll of pharmaceutical sales representative, firstly with Abbott Laboratories and Bristol Meyers Squibb, moving into a sales representative roll for Protelec Alarms Checkmate division and most recently transitioning into territory sales manager with Compass Minerals.
Later in life Mark enjoyed hockey with a special group of men who came together once a week to hit the ice and share in the camaraderie that only a team can provide.
Mark and Lisa have an incredible group of friends; many a house party, weekend at the "lake" or quiet times by the fire was shared between these amazing companions. You know who you are!
Mark was a storyteller. He took considerable pride in sharing experiences and adventures and his audiences always appreciated the exciting embellishments he offered. Mark took the greatest delight of all in reminding us of the important memories that were created together along the way. With his often quiet but always witty demeanor, Mark managed to bring a room to laughter with his stories.
The family extends thanks and gratitude to the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and to the Friday afternoon hockey guys for being with Mark until the very end. You are forever in our hearts.
Cremation has taken place and a private ceremony will take place.

I am so sorry Lisa for your family’s loss. Mark was such a gentleman and a true friend to all who knew him. I always felt supported in our business activities, as Mark was such a professional. I enjoyed many stories about his family’s pharmacy retail business. His family’s business values were evident in Mark’s commitment to salesmanship, customer service and Abbott Laboratories. Most of all, his love for his family was evident in everything that he did. I have thought of him often and can say that he was an absolute privilege to work with. Until we meet again, with our pharmaceutical detail bags in hand!! Definitely some of the best years that I spent in the healthcare industry! Thank you Mark. - Posted by: Leslie Inglis (Friend and Business partner - Abbott Laboratories) on: Mar 04, 2025

I have just recently heard of Mark's passing and I was very saddened to hear the news. He was a person that we comment on as being to young to leave us. I knew Mark as a young fellow many years ago at St. Paul's but even before that when his father coached me at football in the mid 70's. The Nieman family were an amazing family that always gave to the community. Very special people and I was happy to read that Mark followed those paths. I moved to St. John's Newfoundland in 1979 and have been here since that time. I have always tried to keep abreast of friends and people I knew back in Winnipeg. I wish Mark's family the greatest of condolences and know that the impact he had on people's lives will be always appreciated and remembered. - Posted by: Richard Rogers QC (friend) on: Mar 25, 2022

I have not seen Mark since our Graduation from St. Paul's in 1981 - And yet I am still moved by the immediate memory of his incredibly positive energy and extraordinary athleticism. I do not remember a single instance (during our four years in High School) where Mark did not wear a smile - or was very easy to laugh. Always good natured and kind. I have vivid memories of Mark sinking effortless baskets ("nothing but net") while practicing basketball - With a very proud "Coach Ken" supervising (pretending he did not notice). One vivid memory for me involved a Crusader Football game - Mark was the only person I remember both making the "hit" and fumble recovery for a 25 yard defensive touchdown. He was always humble, gentle and warm. Yet a competitive warrior (always smiling). He will live within all of us who knew him. My sincere condolences to the family. Mark was a gem! - Posted by: Ted Mitchell (Friend - St. Paul's) on: Jan 20, 2022

This is the first time in my life I lost a truly great friend. As a colleague of Mark, we spoke weekly about work, sports and life. Mark knew so much about all three. More than that, he was an incredible mentor and someone I truly looked up to and wanted to (and still want) to make proud. Despite being much younger than he, I felt such a genuine and heartfelt care from him; like he believed in me and just wanted to be part of watching and helping me grow. The day I found out he was gone, I was so crushed. I was so upset at myself that I didn't reach out like I wanted to around Christmas time. And yet when I went to sleep that night, I felt a presence that I know was his telling me it was okay. My feelings of regret were quickly replaced by smiles and laughter; almost as if he was chiding and poking fun of me like we always did to each other. I know I will do everything I can to ensure he lives on through me. Just based on the relationship I had with him, I can only imagine how good of a husband and father he was and because of that, I know he will continue to live on in all the people he loved. And with that, I want to offer my deepest condolences but also to salute Mark one more time for the incredible life he lived. Thanks for everything Mark! Godspeed Good Sir! Lauren and family, I am so sorry for your loss of Coach Mark. I hope you can find moments of peace and comfort during this time. Coach Mark was a huge part of my basketball career. He taught me many lessons on and off the court, played me hard and always knew how to cheer me up after a hard fought loss. He knew the game of basketball very well and always came to the gym with a positive attitude, loud voice, and “ready to go”mindset. Coach Mark will be missed dearly but never forgotten as a true legacy and tribute to the basketball community. - Posted by: Juliana Anderson (Coach) on: Jan 09, 2022

My heartfelt Sympathy to the Family. My Thoughts and Prayers are with you all. One of my favourite sayings is…..Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy. My sincere condolences to the Nieman family. I worked with Mark for a time at Protelec, and it was a daily connection with him that formed almost immediately yet felt as though it had been there for a very long time. A big part of the continual conversation with him, whether at work or when three of us alarm alumni would connect for dinner with updates and analysis of each other’s lives, was a constant theme from Mark, every time, about his family. So even though we never had the opportunity to meet you, with Mark we always felt as though we had. I’m so very sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Randy Holyk (Friend & Former Colleague) on: Jan 09, 2022

Growing up the Latter’s and the Nieman’s spent a lot of time together. His sister Darcy was a close friend, and I spent many sleepovers at the Nieman home on Lanark street. Mark would surprise Darcy and I in the middle of the night and flip our mattress - we yelled, we laughed and came to expect it would happen. We just didn’t know when! I love the Nieman family and express my condolences to all of them, his wife and children. Xoxo - Posted by: Janice Gair (Latter) (Friend) on: Jan 08, 2022

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mark, please accept my condolences to Lisa and the kids. I had the honour and privilege to coach with Mark coaching Garrett and Mark being Brody’s Oline coach from Terminator all the way to Minor Bantam. Mark was a great coach always there for the kids and had some amazing one liners ! Mark was integral part of the first ever Atom Championship in St. Vital Mustang History Mark always gave of his time to make the kids better and was a great volunteer! Mark is sitting at the table with all the great coaches and will be in our hearts forever! R.I.P my friend! - Posted by: Graeme Jones (Friend and Team Coach ) on: Jan 08, 2022

My deepest condolences to the Nieman family on your tragic loss of Mark. I had the pleasure of knowing Mark during our time together at Protelec Alarms, and always appreciated his intelligence, calm demeanour, and sense of humour in even the most trying of circumstances. Following our time at Protelec, along with another former colleague we would get together for dinner a few times a year to share stories and enjoy some laughs.
