"With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." - Desiderata

Denis passed away after almost a year long battle with leukemia (AML). Born in St. Boniface to Gérard and Denise (Kenny) Rémillard (both deceased), Denis leaves behind his three brothers, Paul (Louise), Marc (Aline), and Jean (Alida), his mother-in law Cécile Mulaire, his Mulaire in-laws, Madeleine (Raymond), Rachel (Aurèle), Raymond (Gabrielle), Mariette (Brian), Micheline, and Alain. He leaves many nieces and nephews who were all very special to him, as well as many friends, business connections, and old employees.
Denis spent a few leap years in Northern Manitoba. He was an assistant for University of Manitoba grad students doing research on caribou herds. He has told us many great tales of his time spent in the woods, which strengthened his love for nature and the outdoors. Those were some of the greatest years of his life.
In the mid 1970s, Denis landed up in the small town of St. Léon, MB, working odd jobs and trying to find himself. One morning, he woke up and decided: "I'm going to build a greenhouse!", and just like that, his future started to take shape. The horticultural project was first aimed at teaching skills, responsibility, and community involvement to the town's youth. His future life partner Lise joined the project in 1982, and they gradually grew the garden youth project into a 50-acre vegetable and flower farm.
In 1990, many difficulties pushed the couple to move to Winnipeg where they established the market Jardins St-Léon Gardens in Old St. Vital. Through many challenges and despite the many hurdles to properly establish the market, St-Léon Gardens became what it is today.
Throughout his business career and dealings, Denis strived to include the young and those living with challenges by giving them work and extra life opportunities. He was involved in committees such as Habitat Chez Soi and volunteered at Agape Table. Most importantly, many neighbourhood kids will remember the great big backyard skating rink that Denis loved to upkeep and continuously improve. In the last year, the next generation has assured the continuity of the neighbourhood rink, making Denis so very proud.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge the wonderful work and attention that Denis received at CancerCare at Health Sciences Centre, especially Dr. Craig Speziali, Lisa King and all the wonderful staff and nurses who took such great care of him during his many visits. We would also like to thank the Palliative Care team who were there for us during his last days.
Denis was a strong believer in dying on his own terms. He chose to die with medical assistance and applauded the service provided by MAiD. We are forever grateful for the peaceful passing he was able to choose.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send your donations to RAY (Resource Assistance for Youth), an organization close to Denis' heart, that provides support to youth at risk.
In true Denis fashion, we are offering some very simple parting words that he lived by in his everyday life: "Go make the world a better place!"

  • I first met Denis when we were both members of the Board of Residents of Old St Boniface, he was very patient with my french, and after we had both left the board, it was always a pleasure to meet him at Jardin St Leon, and see the growth of the family and business. I am sure he will be missed in many ways and places and offer my sympathies to his family and friends. - Posted by: Margrét Thomas (acquaintence) on: Feb 17, 2022

- Posted by: La famille François (Voisins et amis) on: Feb 14, 2022

  • Just wanted to send my condolences, your father was such a friendly, kind, gracious man. I was always enjoyed seeing him busying himself and greeting customers. I'll never forget the day I was shopping 6 months pregnant, when your father told me to pick any hanging basket that I wanted. I was so shocked and asked him why, he told me it was to celebrate the child I was going to have and the mother I was going to be. I left so full of peace and joy. Sending hugs to you all. - Posted by: Jennifer Goreski (Customer) on: Feb 14, 2022

  • We are so sorry to hear about your loss. Our family looks forward to shopping at St. Leon’s every spring and are saddened when the market closes in the fall. The market that Denis created offers more than fresh and local produce, it’s a place where the music and ambiance helps take away the stress of the day. Denis has truly created a legacy and we are so grateful for that. - Posted by: The Dann’ (Customers ) on: Feb 13, 2022

- Posted by: Charles Roy (ami) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • Our most sincere sympathies to Lise and family. Every year Lise and Denis would set up there "flower, plant stand" in front of our store in St.Claude such wonderful memories, he was such a wonderful man to chat with. RIP Denis. - Posted by: Dawn and Gilles Chappellaz (Friend) on: Jan 22, 2022

- Posted by: Paulette Desaulniers (Cliente et amie) on: Jan 21, 2022

- Posted by: Robert et Irma Grenier (Amis) on: Jan 19, 2022

  • My condolences go out to the Remillard family as my thoughts go back to St. Norbert, L’Abbe Hebert and Katimavik. Denis devoted most of his career as altar boy to making the rest of us laugh at the least opportune times, preferably when L’Abbe Hebert was conducting. Those 6:00am services were far more entertaining when paired with Denis. Denis was a good scout in every way, the very definition of “debrouillard”. Il etait toujours pret. Many, many fond memories of building our suspension bridge at Katimavik, winter camping, blowing the competition away at the Vancouver Jamboree... and Denis inevitably right in the thick of things “Mom chere scoute-maistre excusez moi He n’irais pas au camp, pourquoi? Adieu Denis - Posted by: Marc Ouimet (Fellow altar boy and Boy Scout ) on: Jan 19, 2022

Jeanne de Québec - Posted by: Jeanne Grégoire (amie) on: Jan 17, 2022

I’ll always remember his comment he told me the first time I was goalie (was goalie for 6 yrs). I don’t care what you do but stop that dam puck!!! My sincere sympathy Lise and families. • Dénis gave Winnipeg a beautiful gift and legacy. The gift of local produce, local food, big smiles, fantastic customer service, great music, and a new way to do business. Over the years Denis’ efforts to support and mentor local youth grew in leaps and bounds. He always had time for a conversation and a ´salut too’. Thank you Denis - your customers will miss you. - Posted by: Jo-Ann Finney (St Leon customer) on: Jan 16, 2022

  • I've known Denis since the early 1970's, having been a very good friend of Denis's younger brother since that time. I've always loved Denis. Even if I was younger than him (only a few years, but at the age of 16 or so, a few years makes a big difference), Denis was always very friendly, respectful and always made me feel really good. As his younger brother's buddy, I wasn't only tolerated... I was celebrated! At least I felt that way, which is the most important thing. Apparently, that was a good reflection of Denis's nature and how he lived his life for the many decades to come... No wonder he was so well loved by all! Whenever my wife and I would go shop at Jardins St. Leon, I'd always hope to see him there, just because I wanted to be able to say hi to him and be in his loving presence for even a short while... Sending lots of love to the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Denis, we love you! Robert Champagne - Posted by: Robert & Suzanne Champagne (Friends) on: Jan 16, 2022

  • Memories of warm days and an abundance, acres of tomatoes, my mom and I on our annual "pilgrimage" to get pick-your-own tomatoes. It was a service to people like us who canned and found the produce at Jardins St Leon. We didn't know how he and Lise were, at the same time, helping youth projects. Denis and Lise dreamed big, and now, we've finally realized, they were/are visionaries for a world where local gardens are essential. Our deepest sympathies to Denis's family. Too young to leave this Earth which he knew as a brother. - Posted by: Ilene Maurice (Customers of St Leon Gardens) on: Jan 16, 2022

  • The world has lost a kind and generous soul. Denis was an amazing individual--a lifelong learner, happy to share his expertise and knowledge with anyone who was willing to learn. He taught me so much about plants and gardening, but more importantly, he demonstrated on a daily basis how a positive attitude, hard work and small acts of kindness could make the world a better place…one tomato plant at a time. I’ll miss his million dollar smile. Heartfelt condolences to Lise, Janelle, Luc, Colin and Denis’ extended family. - Posted by: Valerie McPherson (Friend) on: Jan 15, 2022

  • It looks like God looked down and said to himself "I need a friend to stand by the fence and talk about my flowers and how they represent the beauty of youth" so he called Denis.
