EUGENE CECIL JAMES

We regretfully announce the passing of Eugene Cecil James, age 89, of Calgary, Alberta. Known to some as "Gene", he passed away on December 29, 2021, due to natural causes.
Eugene was the only child born to Thelma Mae and Joseph "Jimmy" James on October 24, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Eugene was a good friend to many, loved and respected by all. He was great fun to be with and was always there to help.
Eugene met his lifelong partner Violet Evelyn on a blind date in Winnipeg. They married on August 24, 1958 and had been married for 63 years. He was a loving and devoted husband.
After graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute (DMCI) in Winnipeg, Eugene then worked for the City of Winnipeg but shortly thereafter started his lifelong career in the office furniture and supply business by joining Wilson Stationery Office Supplies in Winnipeg. He was soon in a management position and took on senior roles in Winnipeg, Montreal, and Edmonton. He also enjoyed great success operating and managing office furniture dealerships during his years in Calgary.
Eugene never really retired. Up until just recently he continued, on a consultancy basis, working with some of the major Canadian Banks in assisting the setup of U.S. affiliates.
One of Eugene's favourite hobbies was dog walking. He and Violet had many dogs, and he loved every dog he met. He also enjoyed walking Fish Creek Park with his neighbour Peter and completing yard work - no matter what the weather. But if you asked him about his favourite hobby he'd always respond, "It's my work!".
Eugene was a Past Worshipful Master and 66 year member of Beaver Ionic Lodge No. 25, Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Eugene is survived by his wife, Violet and will be sorely missed by a host of friends and admirers.
A memorial for Eugene will be held on a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, P.O. Box 336, Stn M, Calgary, AB T2P 9Z9 or a charity of your choice.
