CARL RICHARD PLOHMAN

It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our cherished and beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother and uncle at the age of 78 after a difficult but courageous fight against brain cancer.
He will be forever loved and missed by his wife Shirley (Altman) (married 56 years), daughter Crystal Wiegman (William), sons, James (Tracy) and Jason (Raegan), beloved grandchildren, Trent, Rhea, Liat, Kelsie, Josh, Cohen and Brooklyn and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by siblings Muriel, John (Pat), Gary (Shaunda), Grant (Judy), and Lorna (Ron). He was predeceased by parents, Hans and Anne Plohman, brother Jim, granddaughter Chloe, in-laws, Reinhard, Elsie Altman and Jim Gambrel.
Carl taught himself to play fiddle at age 13 and performed with many bands and family across North America. He was a talented fiddler and won many fiddle competitions in both Canada and the USA culminating in his induction into the Manitoba Fiddle Association Hall of Fame. His music will live on through his daughter Crystal and grandchildren, Kelsie, Rhea, Liat and Josh.
He was a very loving, kind and gentle soul and had a smile that lit up the room. Carl and Shirley loved to travel and went to places such as New Zealand, Fiji, Costa Rica, China and Hawaii. He also took cruises through the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mediterranean and a 28 day voyage through the South Pacific.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Bachelor of Education and taught school for 33 years. He always made everyone feel important and inspired many students to continue their education in University.
His children and grandchildren were his great pride and joy. He enjoyed spending time with them sharing his love of fiddling, playing golf, ping pong, curling and debating science problems with his grandson Trent. He loved to attend their musical and sports activities and was so very proud of their achievements.
We would like to thank our family and friends, home care workers and Beausejour hospital staff for their care and understanding.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer due to the pandemic.

Condolences & Memories (27 entries)

  • I knew Carl through fiddling. Carl contributed much to preserving and promoting our cultural heritage of fiddling in Manitoba. In 1999, Manitoba was the only province that didn’t have a fiddle association. I worked with Carl on the board, to start The Manitoba Fiddle Association. Carl took on the position of Treasurer and helped out in many capacities for many years. I loved his intellectual puns, followed by that contagious grin. You had to smile, even if you didn’t get it. Carl will be missed in the fiddling world. It’s great to see that Carl fiddling legacy will be carried on through his children and grandchildren. Sincere condolences to family on behalf of myself and the Manitoba Fiddle Association. - Posted by: Larry Martineau (Co-founder Manitoba Fiddle Association) on: Mar 01, 2022

  • Shirley, It really saddens me to find out about the passing of Carl. Many years have passed since we last visited but he has always been in my mind. I also have been following the career of Crystal. Stephen passed away from the rarest form of lung cancer 13 years ago. I still remember how Crystal would complain to him about taking those fiddle lesson. His wife was 5 months pregnant with his daughter. Ruth has also passed away shortly before. I vividly remember going with you and Carl to see Charlie Pride at Brandon and Carl was terribly disappointed. Michael also sends his condolences. He still retains excellent memories of Carl coaching him for the Reach For The Top team. Duane - Posted by: Duane Reves (friend) on: Mar 01, 2022

  • Our sincere condolences to you Shirley and your family. Many of cherished memories will forever be in our hearts having had the opportunity to enjoy Carl's music and knowing him (one of a kind). As well; our heartfelt thoughts are with Muriel, John and Pat, Grant and Judy, Gary and Shaunda, Lorna and Ron. - Posted by: Gary & Lynn Shabaga (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2022

  • We are saddened by Carl's passing but fondly remember Carl's music in Thunder Bay competitions. Our condolences to you Shirley and the extended family. - Posted by: Irvin & Shirley Bauch (cousin) on: Jan 26, 2022

  • My heartfelt condolences to Aunt Shirley, Crystal, Jamie, Jason & families. I have many wonderful childhood memories of Uncle Carl that I cherish. Our “polka parties” in the basement of the house in Glenboro. Where we found the energy to dance for hours and hours I’ll never know. Running, sliding and playing on the nearby sandhills, holidays with all the family in Ashern, stories from Reach for the Top, science questions (and answers!) and of course the music. You will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Kathy (Gambrel) Burnham (Niece) on: Jan 25, 2022

  • Carl and I were good friends thru our High School days in Steep Rock. Pretty much every recess and lunch break we would go out and throw the football around and ended up kicking it back and forth to try and get a spiral... We competed against each other to see who would go to the Annual field day. We competed in the 100 yard dash as we both liked running. Carl and I ran against each other to try to see who would go to the field day we were tied. So of course had to run again who won.... Carl..... Always had the one of a kind smile. Listened to radio to hear his band playing, it was right at the beginning I beleive he played then for the CKRC Chuckwagon band. (May not be exact name) Sincere condolences to Shirley and Family and Grant whom I saw a lot at the curling rink in Beausejour and all the Plohman Family. And, of course use to trade comic books in Moosehorn with Shirley. Lloyd - Posted by: Lloyd Dreger (Friend) on: Jan 24, 2022

  • Deepest condolences to Mr. Plohman's family!! He helped me survive high school and made it okay to love old-time fiddle music when it wasn't cool. He will always be my hero for that. - Posted by: Betty-Jean MacKay (Student, Fellow music lover) on: Jan 24, 2022

  • Mr. Plohman was my high school science teacher in Glenboro. I have many memories of him in the science lab. Please accept my condolences on his passing. - Posted by: Cheryl McGill Battersby (Former student) on: Jan 24, 2022

  • Carl was my high school science teacher in the late 1970s. I enjoyed his classes, and even most of the puns, which seemed to spring forth almost every class. Our paths intersected on occasion over the years; most unusually in a motel lobby in Gary Indiana. He and Shirley were either heading to, or from, Nashville to visit Crystal. Rest easy, sir, and thank you again for the knowledge and memories. - Posted by: James Todd Rolfe (Student) on: Jan 23, 2022

  • Sincere sympathy to you all - Shirley, Crystal, Jamie, Jason and families. Carl was one of a kind. Such a dedicated educator: always willing to explain material again and again, patient with immature students, and being the endless source of "punny" remarks. His talent as a fiddle player was incredible. I remember walking into the basement of your Glenboro home and being rendered absolutely speechless by the walls of trophies and awards (well, one or two of them may have been Crystal's!) Treasure the memories and take pride in his legacy. Take care. - Posted by: Connie Feader (Co-worker) on: Jan 23, 2022

  • Our hearts broke when we read of Carl passing. Carl was a special friend that we did not see very often, in the last few years, but we have many special memories of the past - Aston Villa school days, playing in a band together at old country dances, (Carl was the best fiddle player ever). He played at our wedding, at our 25th anniversary and at our 50th anniversary, eight years ago. Meeting up with Carl and Shirley occasionally over the years, times of renewing an old friendship with lots of reminiscing and catching up. (Beautiful memories are like old friends, they may not always be on your mind but are forever in your heart). Shirley, our deepest sympathy to you and your family, our prayers are with you. Also, our love and condolences to all the Plohman family. Ricard and Bernice Middlestead - Posted by: Richard and Bernice Middlestead (Friends) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • Our deepest sympathies to Shirley and all the family on the loss of your dear husband, father and grandfather. We are so very sorry for your loss. I first met Carl when he joined my Mother and Father’s band; The Interlake Polka Kings. Carl was such a genuine soul, he was so talented, gifted, kind, funny and was truly a professional while touring with all of us kids from the Woloshyn family, my Mom and Dad and the other band members. He always had a smile on his face and always took the time to talk with you. He genuinely listened and always took an interest in what you had to say. Carl was one of the finest fiddle players ever. We feel fortunate to have seen Carl and Shirley at a Christmas concert at Holy Eucharist just before COVID. Of course Carl had a great joke for me, always so willing to make people laugh and smile. Dear Shirley and family; we truly are so very sorry for your loss, The music world has lost an outstanding musician and a wonderful human. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Angie Anderson (nee Woloshyn) (Friend) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • Carl was my high school science teacher and curling coach in Glenboro. I didn’t relate to his sense of humor at the time, but ever since then whenever I come across a good corny pun joke, I’ve thought that I’ll have to remember that one in case I see Mr Plohman again. I’m sorry that won’t happen now and I’m sorry that we’ve lost him. I very much appreciate the time (and patience) that he took to teach us. - Posted by: Chris Wytinck (Student) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • Carl was a couple of years ahead of me in University. My first week was intimidating for a young hayseed and I will ever be grateful for Carl looking me up on campus and offering to help me settle in. He regularly checked up on me throughout the year to make sure I was coping. Carl and Gary Rapkee were the only students from the Interlake that ever bothered to exhibit the selfless behaviour necessary to make a fellow student from the countryside welcome. - Posted by: Bengt Kaus (Friend) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • Dear Shirley AND FAMILY. Heartfelt condolences from all of us. A life well lived. May Carls memory be a blessing. - Posted by: Priscilla Duly & Kiesman sisters (Old friends from Moosehorn) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • We have had the great pleasure of being friends with Carl and Shirley for the last twenty years or more. There have been many joyful events we have shared with groups that got together in various places over the years. There were always many laughs and competitive games. We were always welcomed into Carl and Shirley’s home as if we were part of the family. Covid has kept us at a distance during this past time when Carl and Shirley needed support, our prayers and love has been there for them during this battle. Shirley we are still here for you and the family, God is with you in this time of grief and will be with you as Carl will be. - Posted by: Ron & Alice Gibson (Friends) on: Jan 22, 2022

  • We are so sorry to hear of the loss in your family of your brother Gary and so soon after the loss of your own brother Shaunda. I have never met your brother but after reading the obituary, I think I would have found him to be a really interesting man; it’s his obvious love and commitment to his music study and making. Since he was a fiddler, we may even know some of the same people in the local fiddling circle. All our love to both of you and I hope we can finally get together in the not too distant future. - Posted by: Shirley and Bill Rayner (Friends of Gary and Shaunda) on: Jan 22, 2022
