CHRISTOPHER FURLAN

Our family is sad to share the news of the passing of our brother Christopher on Monday, January 17, 2022. Chris's passing came after a brief and sudden battle with brain cancer in the Calgary Foothills Hospital.
Born October 27, 1959 to Louis and Alice Furlan, Chris was the fifth of seven children. He grew up in Charleswood, attending Beaumont Elementary School and Oak Park High School. He made many lifelong friends at Oak Park, being involved in Drama, Track and Field and Rugby to name just a few activities. His Oak Park friends from over the years have expressed sadness at the news of his passing. Chris took on many jobs working at a number of places such as Form and Function and The Keg. During his time at The Keg, Chris gained more friends and shared many good times on both sides of the bar. Sensing a need for change, Chris moved to Banff in the late 1990s and began working at the Banff Centre. He became heavily involved in the Banff community, primarily through volunteering with the Banff Legion. His impact on the Banff community was far reaching, as was evident in response to the news of his passing.
Chris is survived by his siblings, Daniel, Louis, Eileen MacDonald (Ian), Anita, Mark (Kerry Avery) and Aldo. He also leaves to mourn his nieces, Jessica and Colleen and his nephew Grant, as well as many cousins from the Flood and Furlan branches of the family.
We would like to acknowledge the staff at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary for their high quality care. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Kathy Ferguson, a family friend, for her support at this difficult time.
Donations in Chris's name can be made to CancerCare Manitoba: cancercarefdn.mb.ca or Alberta https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/give/give.aspx
Our family was blessed to have Chris home this past September for an entertaining visit, in which we toured a number of Charleswood landmarks, seeing friends and relatives along the way. Chris knew what was ahead and was prepared.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.

  • The Kelly family wishes to offer our deepest condolences to the Furlans on the loss of their brother, Chris. He was such a sweet and kind gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour. We have many happy memories of growing up in Charleswood beside our great aunt Grace’s house (his grandmother) where the Furlan and Floods and Kellys would frequently gather. Luckily Chris, Mark and Aldo had a visit with my parents this summer and they really appreciated that visit. He and I connected on Facebook in recent years and he always made a funny remark that made me smile. Rest In Peace dear Chris! - Posted by: Erin Bereznay ( Kelly) (Cousin) on: Feb 07, 2022

  • Our deepest sympathies go out to the Furlan family. I did not know Chris personally but knew others in the family. They were a very close knit family that loved sports. Our family connection was mainly through hockey and our lives are so much richer from knowing Chris's family. May they find peace and happiness in the loving memories Chris has left in their hearts. - Posted by: Patrick Bend (Family Friend) on: Jan 31, 2022

  • My sincere condolences to all. Chris is often included in childhood memories of Municipal Rd. Truly sorry for your loss - Posted by: Dolores (Friend) on: Jan 30, 2022

  • To the entire Furlan family I send my deepest heartfelt sympathies. Chris was a few years older than me and has been a very close friend to my sister since High School. Any time I spent with Chris he was always such a kind person, he even treated me like a little brother in his company. When ever he was in town he would always drop by to have a visit with my parents and I would make an effort to try to be there to say hi. To the Furlan family, please know he was a member of our family also. Sadly he will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Michael Hinson (Friend) on: Jan 30, 2022

  • Condolences to Chris’s family. I have fond memories of Chris from Beaumont Elementary and Oak Park High school. Chris was always there to dance with at the Oak Park dances. He was always fun to hang around with as I spent a lot of time on Municipal Rd hanging with Sheila & Judy. Time goes by but those good memories will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace my friend. - Posted by: Cathy O’Neill Imlah (Childhood friend) on: Jan 29, 2022
