ALBERT (AL) STEPHEN
March 27, 1945 - January 25, 2022
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Al after a long hard-fought battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife and soulmate Diane; children, Shaun (Kim), Curt (Kari), Jennifer (Dean); grandchildren, Emily, Alyssa, Hannah, Grayson and Chase, the lights of his life; sister Marlene Gottfried, nephew David Gottfried (Jenny); great-nephew Lochlan Gottfried and many cousins.
Al was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Irene Stephen; brother-in-law Bob Gottfried; niece Sherry Gottfried and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Al lived a full life. He was an avid sports enthusiast, golfer, curler, reader, gardener, traveller, and organizer.
Throughout his life, career in transportation and love of sports, both playing and coaching, he made many lifelong friendships.
Wherever Al was he always knew someone and there was no sports statistic that he could not quote.
Al loved to be the organizer, whether it be a casino bus trip, curling league or running the ROMEO golf group. He loved to travel, in the early years with his family, and then later to Puerto Vallarta being his destination of choice.
Many thanks to St. Boniface Palliative Care for their kindness in Al's final days.
Cremation has taken place and there is no formal service.
If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Condolences may be sent to www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com
We love you always
Will miss you forever
Finally at peace.

My sincere sympathies to the Stephen family. We worked together at Transit for a number of years. In addition, Al played shortstop on the fast pitch team I coached. I had a lengthy chat with Al last December and value that opportunity to share our past. RIP friend. Martin - Posted by: Martin Kaczkowski (Transit Co-worker) on: Feb 17, 2022

I was very saddened to read of the passing of Sonny. That's what we all called him in St. James. I knew Sonny as he was growing up and eventually had the opportunity and pleasure to coach him in baseball and football. Sonny was a terrific athlete, smart, and always gave 110%. I'm not surprised to see that he coached teams himself as he had all the traits that make good coaches. It's been several years since Sonny and I crossed paths, but he was always someone I had great respect for as a young man. Lots of good memories of his exploits on the field and his friendship will always remain. My most sincere condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Maurice (Moe) Hogue (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2022

Glenda and I wish to pass our condolences to Diane and the Stephen's family on the passing of Al. Al was always there to help out whomever. He was a mentor in my career at Transit and a good friend afterwards. He will be missed and always in our hearts. - Posted by: Alain Deforel (Wpg Transit) on: Feb 06, 2022

Al was my first transit supervisor when I started there 25 years ago. He was easy to talk to and would listen when you needed him to. After he retired from Transit I would see him around town from time to time and he would always be happy to stop and talk for a moment. Now another good man gone from here. I am sorry for the families loss. - Posted by: Darlene McWilliams (co-worker) on: Feb 05, 2022

From the moment I met my ops supervisor Al at Winnipeg Transit back in 1994, I knew he was a wonderful man. He was always fair with me and we managed to have a few laughs over some of my rookie mistakes. I was also lucky enough to curl one time with him in the Civic Bonspiel at Fort Rouge Curling Club along with 2 other co workers. I enjoyed curling and talking to him. He was such a kind man and had a wonderful smile. He will be truly missed. - Posted by: Elaine Nicholl (co worker) on: Feb 05, 2022

Sorry to hear of Al’s passing. Al was one the hardest working people I knew and always had time for those around him. He will be missed. - Posted by: Henry Claeys (Co-Worker) on: Feb 05, 2022

Al and I, cousins, have had very limited contact over the decades but whenever we were able to talk or get together I was always struck by his kind-hearted nature. He was also fun, it was always a pleasure to be in the same room with him. I am sure his family will miss his presence immensely. I extend to them my deepest sympathy. I have very found memories of him at transit. We had enjoyed a coffee or two in the food court. Well liked and respected - Posted by: Robert Gagnon (Worked at transit) on: Feb 05, 2022
