JOSEPH CHARLES GOUGEON-RYANT

Joseph Charles Gougeon-Ryant, 86 years old, passed away in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 23, 2022.
Born on July 12, 1935 in Montreal, Joe grew up and was educated in Montreal, and later lived primarily in Winnipeg and Victoria. He had extensive stays in England and Hong Kong. Joe and his wife Ann returned to Winnipeg in 2020 to be closer to his middle son Howard and to Ann's son Jordan.
Joe had a long and successful career as an academic, primarily as a professor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba, serving also for a time as Head of the School of Social Work. In the early 1990s, he was Head of Social Work at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was passionate about his work and loved what he did until he retired in the late 1990s.
Joe married Ann Gougeon in 2000. He was a devoted and loving husband to his "Annie." He loved sitting on the couch, holding her hand and singing a song to her. It was apparent to all that Joe and Ann were truly a loving couple.
Joe's family and friends remember him as an engaged and witty conversationalist; he was interested in what others had to say and loved to talk about important issues of the day. He loved keeping up with politics and was a voracious reader of several news publications.
Joseph is survived by his wife Ann; his three children, Nathan (Marylu), Howard (Brenda-Lee) and Richard (Hélène). He was grandfather to Bradley (Kelcie), Jeremy (Rebecca), Cayla and great-grandfather to Sawyer.
Cremation has taken place. It was Joe's wish not to have a service. Donations in his name can be made to the charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I shared meals at Shaftesbury Retirement Home with Joe for over a year. That rekindled an earlier relationship at the University. Joe was a renaissance man, with interest and knowledge of art, music, politics and world wide cultures. Most of all he was a caring human being who showed a keen, genuine interest in the people he met. His treatment of all the staff at Shaftesbury was known and admired. I cried at his passing. I have donated to the heart and Stroke in Joe's honour. - Posted by: Raymond Currie (friend) on: Feb 26, 2022

  • Joe was a great and positive influence in my life and I am so grateful to have known him. We had some visits in Victoria over the years. I will miss him. - Posted by: Kati Heinrich (friend) on: Feb 19, 2022

  • The Professor Joe Ryant - It was 1978 - I walked into Tier Building at U of M to the School of Social Work. I had two years in another faculty that I transferred from as I wanted to be part of something bigger, more political - something that was about social justice; something about humanity. I wanted to learn from scholars who spoke of fairness and equity and access for all. And it was there that I met Professor Joe Ryant. I see him clearly seated in front of us in a lecture room (not at the podium) casually, yet very much on purpose, drawing us students into what I consider, forty four years later, some of the most thought provoking, challenging, critical and inspiring conversations (not lectures) that I have ever had. He had a profound impact on my career and that of many social workers. His ethics, values and principles were instilled in those of us who had the good fortune to receive his teachings. We carry them forward. To the Gougeon-Ryant family, my sincerest regard and sympathy as you grieve the loss of a truly remarkable man. May memories and time and the knowledge that a legacy has been left bring peace and comfort. - Posted by: Lucille Meisner (Social Work Student) on: Feb 14, 2022
