MARY HORBAL
(nee WACH)
May 16, 1922 - February 5, 2022
It is with profound sadness that the family of Mary Horbal announce her passing at Holy Family nursing home on February 5. Mary passed peacefully in her sleep Saturday due to complications from COVID.
Mary was predeceased by her two sons, Taras (Terry) and Gerald (Gerry); and daughter-in-law Carolyn.
Survived by her two grandsons, Geoffrey and Matthew Horbal.
Mary worked for many years at Eaton's and we have many found memories of her taking us there to eat and shop on many special occasions. Mary took great pride in her house and yard often working outside into the evening. Mary was a lifelong member of Holy Eucharist Church and loved singing in the choir and making perogies. Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and when we were children, we referred to her as "Grandma who laughs". She always took care of her grandchildren, and she will be deeply missed.
May she rest in peace and finally be reunited with her sons.
Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 505 Watt Street followed by interment at Elmwood Cemetery.

So sorry for the loss of your grandmother. In past years, she would often babysit you two while your mom Carolyn and I would go out. She always seemed so happy! One time, I invited her to my place so she could teach your mom, Brandon, Cal, Gloria, Kathy and I how to make perogies. She kept us in stitches the whole time! We all laughed so much that day! And....she gave us her precious perogy dough recipe! It was like gold! I've had so many compliments on the perogies I've made since then and I smile as I tell people that Mary Horbal taught me all I know about perogies! I hope you will find great comfort in the days ahead as you think upon your memories of your grandmother. - Posted by: Beryl Graham (family friend) on: Feb 13, 2022

Jamison Ave would not have been the same without her, and her fantastic garden. Thanks for the childhood memories. Darryl M (son of Mike M and Jean M). - Posted by: Darryl M (neighbor) on: Feb 10, 2022

I was saddened to hear about Mary's passing. I have fond memories of her when she moved into Holy Family. She was initially seated at the same table as my mother, Doris Fostey, and we often chatted about her days working at Eaton's and her love of gardening at her house in Elmwood. I would often top up her cup of tea. Some days we'd play cards, but when the weather was nice I'd take her outside with my mom to the gardens in the home's backyard. Mary had a lovely sense of humour and was appreciative of the company. I didn't see her often during the past two years of the pandemic, but would ask staff how she was doing. I'm going to picture her gardening in heaven. My condolences to her family and friends. - Posted by: Judy Owen (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2022
