(EDWARD) CARLYLE SHERWIN
May 22, 1934 - February 3, 2022
The extended Sherwin family is sad to announce the passing of Carlyle (EC) Sherwin.
Carlyle was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Florence, and his brother Murray. He is survived by his brother Conrad (Bev), and brother-in-law, and good friend (and the person who introduced him to Flo), Allan Millard. He is also survived by his two sons, Mike (Caroline) and Rod (Jane), and six grandchildren: Hank (Laurie), Alice (Kristjan), Tom (Hannah), Lucas (Mackenzie), Molly, Isabelle (Dakota), and great-grandson Arlo.
Carlyle was raised on a small farm just outside of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He went to a one-room school house, sometimes on foot, sometimes horseback, and in the winter on skis. A descendant of both Inkster's and Swain's, Carlyle had Métis heritage which he loved to share. His Grandma Inkster lived in an out-building on their farm for a time. She lived to the ripe old age of 106 years, and shared many stories, including some of the Métis Resistance. Before he died we were fortunate to hear and record some of that oral history from Carlyle.
Carlyle loved to tell a good story, and when he started talking with, "Did I ever tell you the story about..." you never quite knew where it would lead. Sometimes it was not a story at all, but rather a very long, drawn-out joke that required many extraneous details and side-comments. He had quite a few regular "stories" and we started to joke that maybe we should number them, as he would continue even after we emphatically said that, yes, we had heard it. Like, "Oh, here comes the camel joke, is it number 5 or 6?"
Carlyle had a long and varied career as a Civil Engineer, but he was much more than that. He was a loving father and grandpa, and wonderful father-in-law. He enjoyed a nice long retirement with Flo. They had years of travel, golf, tennis, family time and puzzles. He was still easily completing daily crosswords and Sudokus up to his dying week.
Carlyle was famous for talking about how lucky he felt for having a close family. He and his wife, Flo, had a strong, long-lasting bond. When she got sick with dementia, he was an absolute superhero, doing everything she needed. He said caring for her in his last years gave him purpose, and it must have. Having been born within three days of each other in the same Prince Albert hospital, he died within five months of her. We would all kind of roll our eyes when he started to expound on how fortunate he was, but we have come to realize that he really meant what he said. Our loud, raucous, laughter-filled gatherings can be a lot, but in the end, family is important, and if you are lucky enough to have a close one, you should cherish it.
There will be a private family service later in the year.

So sorry to hear of Carlyle’s passing- my husband and Carlyle began their civil engineering careers with the consulting firm BB Torchinsky. Carlyle was here in Yorkton and Randy in Saskatoon. They went to a convention in Chicago in 1963 together and became friends. In 1964 we moved to Yorkton when my husband was hired in the Yorkton engineering dept. and Florence and Carlyle welcomed us with open arms! I was also a nurse so we had much in common. In early 1965 we took Michael and Robbie into our house so Florence and Carlyle could go to a conference I think! For many years we corresponded at Christmas but eventually lost touch and I suddenly thought of them and googled Carlyle and was so sorry that I didn’t do this months ago! My husband died in July of 2019 and though he succumbed to cancer he had been diagnosed with dementia three years prior. My condolences to the family. My condolences on your dad's ("Mr. Sherwin", not EC or Carlyle to me!) passing. I am forever indebted to your mom and dad taking me along on those fantastic ski trips (Falcon Lake, Lake Louise, Kimberley) and road trips in the big Merc so many years ago. It started a family tradition in our family which lives on today. And yes, I do remember the camel joke! - Posted by: Brian Bergen (Friend of Rod and Mike) on: Feb 12, 2022

I worked with Carl in the early 90s. He was one of my favourites. So sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Karen (Past coworker) on: Feb 12, 2022
