HELMUTH ERIC KLASSEN
May 4, 1943 February 12, 2022
Helmuth was born to Aganetha (nee Martens) and Jacob Klassen. He grew up on the family farm and participated in the Steinbach Mennonite Brethren Church where he got to know Agnes Goertzen. They married on July 2, 1964.
Helmuth and Agnes welcomed Joanne in 1966 and Richard in 1968. They supported their children in their efforts at sports, music and academics. They welcomed Richard's wife Eileen and eventually grandchildren, Julianna, Emma and Grace. Helmuth and Agnes loved being grandparents and invested much love and time in their grandchildren. Julianna's husband Taylor was cherished when he joined the family. Helmuth also welcomed Joanne's partner Wayne.
Helmuth worked as a teacher, principal, CEO of Donwood Manor and as a healthcare consultant. Church life was a vital part of life and Helmuth participated in various roles at River East Church over the years.
Life was not without hardships. The most difficult was Agnes' diagnosis with terminal cancer. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary before she died in September 2018. Helmuth grieved the loss of Agnes until his own death, however he also loved life and wanted to live fully. Recently health concerns increased for Helmuth. On February 10 he went to the hospital and died unexpectedly and peacefully on February 12, 2022 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Funeral service for the double vaccinated will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2022 at River East Church, 755 McLeod Avenue, Winnipeg, with viewing prior. There will be viewing on Thursday, February 17, 2022 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in groups of 50 at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg. Interment at Sunnyside Cemetery.
If friends desire, donation may be made to River East Church Refugee Fund or Donwood Manor Foundation in Helmuth's memory.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)
Jan 1994, You offered your hand at the moment when we were on our knees. You kept that hand extended, ever since. We felt safe...secure, knowing that hand is there when/if we need it. We'll miss that hand. We will miss you and we will remember you. We can never thank you enough, for all that. Rest in peace Rada, Sandra, Vedran and Adi - Posted by: Adnan Hodzic (friend) on: Feb 18, 2022
Mr Klassen was my grade five teacher, and just a few weeks ago on January 21st he sent me an e-mail to tell me how much he had appreciated me as a student and that when he read something I'd had published or heard about an accomplishment of mine he was proud of me. I couldn't believe he had taken the time to do that and I appreciated it so much. I wrote a post on my blog about why I had appreciated Mr Klassen so much as a teacher. https://maryloudriedger2.wordpress.com/2022/01/25/a-letter-from-my-teacher/ I am so sorry to hear of his sudden passing. He was a fantastic teacher and I will never forget him. - Posted by: MaryLou Driedger (former student ) on: Feb 16, 2022
Our sincere sympathy to Joanne, Richard and family in the loss of you dad and grandpa. Helmuth and Agnes were our neighbors on Wallace Ave for many years where you spent your childhood days. Your dad had a gentle nature and we enjoyed our conversations over the years. Most of the time your dad had a hoe or a rake in his hand, tending to the weeds which never got a chance to grow in your well manicured yard. I am sure he will be missed by all who knew him. Hugs to all, Dolores & Moe - Posted by: Dolores Romaniuk (neighbor) on: Feb 16, 2022
Dear friends, We are so sorry to hear of Helmuth's passing. He and Agnes were such beautiful people, and we loved them dearly. We got to know them in the 1990s, when Helmuth married us at River East Church, and he and Agnes provided us with thoughtful marriage counselling. The message he created for our marriage ceremony had the theme of joy, and continues to be cherished (we read through it each anniversary). We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family. We will always remember Helmuth with much love and especially joy. Love, Marti Harder & Marc Piche, Ladysmith, BC - Posted by: Marti Harder & Marc Piche (Friends) on: Feb 15, 2022
