MARY CARTLIDGE
1930 - 2022
Mary Elisabeth Cartlidge (nee Pedersen) passed away peacefully at Tudor House in Selkirk, Manitoba on February 11, 2022, from complications due to COVID-19.
Mary was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on October 19, 1930, one of four girls, to Charles and Alma (Thorup) Pedersen. During high school years, she was active in track and field, showed horses at regional fairs and kept chickens for egg money to help out at home.
She met Al Cartlidge setting pins at the local bowling alley in Portage. They were married October 10, 1949 and had 69 wonderful years together before Al passed away.
They shared a love of the outdoors and travel, enjoying fishing, camping and tennis in Manitoba and adventure travel to other parts of Canada and the world. She especially enjoyed their year-long teacher exchange stay in South Australia where she learned the ins and outs of fruit tree orcharding and sheep farming.
Over her lifetime, she raised three girls, fostered teens in need, worked as a teacher's aide, and volunteered many community service hours, in both Portage and Selkirk, where they relocated in 1960. Always curious about people's stories, including her own, she dug into family roots in Denmark, too. Hers is truly a global set of friends and family.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, siblings, Thora and Anna, and relatives in Denmark.
Mary is survived by her three daughters, Conni, Nancy (Dennis) Fontaine, Thora (Terry Kolomeychuk), her sister Alice Chamley and foster daughter Marlene Barrault; grandchildren, Joe, Mary, Ari, Pat, Liza, Jake, Petro, Mykhaylo, Heather Ann and Jim, as well as great-grandchildren; also nieces and nephews across Canada and the U.S. and cousins in Denmark.
Cremation has taken place, in accordance with Mary's wishes. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date, following interment of ashes with Al's at St. Anne's Anglican Church, Poplar Point.
Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk

About 15 yrs ago I signed up for a "Classic Film" Course at the U of W. It was my first time in the bldg & I was lost. I called out to a lady hurrying by me to ask for assistance. She said "if you wait until I attend the Ladies Room, I'll take you with me". What timing & good luck on my part! It was Mary and for the next 2 years, every week, I sat with Mary and her wonderful husband Al as we laughed, shared stories and enjoyed our common interest, Classic Movies. I will never forget their warmth and all the fun-loving and exciting stories they shared with me. What a wonderful legacy to leave. I enjoyed seeing a picture of Mary as a young woman and also the story shared by her Daughter, Thora, in the newspaper today. My condolences to the family. They both made me feel like extended family! - Posted by: Joy French (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2022

I really enjoyed meeting our Mom’s lifelong friend Mary, and hearing about their experiences growing up together. Mom treasured their friendship. She told me a cute story of them going to the movies together and then defending their home against “invasion” with pretend guns when they got home. We paid tribute to their friendship by looking at their yearbooks and autograph books. Rest In Peace dear Mary. You will be forever remembered. - Posted by: Sandy Goran (Lifelong Friend “Mickey’s” daughter. ) on: Mar 07, 2022
