REV. JOHN A. MELNYK
December 18, 1927 – February 7, 2022

Surrounded by his loving family, our father passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2022. Predeceased by his loving wife Sonia; parents, Alex and Magda; brothers, Dan (Nettie), Harry (Ada) and sister Anne (Bill).
Dad is lovingly remembered by his family, son Johnny (Deanne); daughter Patti (Jeff); grandchildren, Daniel (Valerie), Kyle (Kayla), Casandra (Chris); great-grandson Liam Gough and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our father was born and raised on the family farm just east of Fraserwood, Manitoba. Farm life molded him into the man we admire, respect and love today. Dad was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage.
Dad was the first in his family to attend high school by travelling daily by train to Teulon. He went on to further his education by attending Teacher's College in Winnipeg and to university to obtain his master's degree.
How far you came in your life, dearest father and how very proud we are of all your accomplishments.
Our dad was a teacher and principal throughout East Kildonan at Munroe Jr. High, Lord Wolseley, Princess Margaret and John DeGraff schools where he retired after 42 years.
Ordained a Greek Orthodox Priest, he served at various churches – St. Ivan Suchovsky, St. Demetrios, St. Michael's, Garden South, Ethelbert, Regina and Thunder Bay.
Our dad was involved with numerous charitable organizations throughout his life. He was a very proud member of the Sons of Ukrainian Pioneers (S.O.U.P.).
We know how heartbroken he was when our mother passed away. We take great comfort knowing that they are together again.
Our memories of you will be eternal and will remain in our hearts forever, until we meet again.
A private family funeral has been held and a memorial service will be held in the spring.

We love you, dearest father and Geedo.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • To the Melnyk family, My deepest condolences for the loss of your father & grandfather. Father Melynk was the principal at my first teaching job at John De Graff school. He was very kind to me & I believe he hired me because of my Ukrainian heritage. A few years later, I saw him at a concert at Pantages Theatre. He asked if I was married & upon hearing that I wasn't, asked me to invite him to my wedding. As I moved away from Wpg that didn't happen. It would have been an honour. I was always impressed that he was both a priest and a teacher. May he rest in heavenly peace with your mother. - Posted by: Debbie Jumaga (Teaching colleague ) on: Apr 15, 2022

  • Dear Johnny, Patti & families...Your father's father & my mother's mother, Maria Sklepowich were cousins who lived on their respective quarter sections near Fraserwood. The Melnyks & Kozubs had a very loving relationship. I attended John & Sonia's wedding when I was 13 years old. The day before your mother died we had a long telephone conversation. Sonia was cooking apples that day. I also talked to your father. We would talk perhaps four or five times a year. I loved John & I really enjoyed our conversations. When my husband was in Palliative Care for five days before he died, John was a great comfort to me as he visited the hospital three times. Our family was honoured to be invited to many celebrations for John & or Sonia. At their anniversary celebration John asked if we knew his favourite Ukrainian song. We didn't but the five of us learned it & got together with John & Sonia at Koren & Leonard's place one afternoon for a lovely lunch & sang the song for John. I will miss John & Sonia so much & I am so grateful to have shared such a loving relationship with two wonderful people. My condolences to all of you. ...Karin - Posted by: Karin Woods(Kozub) (cousin) on: Mar 07, 2022

  • John and Patti and families, We Kozub cousins are all so sad that you have lost both of your parents within weeks of each other. We loved your father and mother. We have many happy memories going back as far as visiting your grandparents' family farm just outside of Fraserwood. Of course, we knew all of your dad's siblings and were close to them, as they were our mother's cousins. Personally, I will really miss the occasional phone conversations with your father, when we would talk about various relatives and goings-on in the family. He was a delightful conversationalist. Please accept my sincere condolences at this sad time. We very much hope to join you at the memorial service in the spring. We will watch the paper; you can also notify me through Facebook, if you wish. - Posted by: Tusia Kozub (cousin) on: Mar 04, 2022

  • Sincere sympathies to the family. Mr. Melnyk was the Principal at the three schools I taught. He was a good friend. May He Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Olia Susky (Friend) on: Feb 24, 2022

  • Gary & I send our sincere condolences on the loss of your Father. We met Father John many years ago when he presided over the funeral of my Uncle. Then he married us in 2008. He was an exceptional man. For his age I admired how down to earth he was, saw the world in a different way from others from his generation. We also spent many Sundays going to church because of him. We also send our condolences on the loss of your Mother last year. We did not know she passed. They are together now. God Bless. They lived a great life. - Posted by: Darlene Chizick (Friend/acquaintance ) on: Feb 23, 2022

  • To the Melnyk Family. We are very sad to hear of the passing of your beloved Father and Gido. Back from when my Grandparents were living and attending church services at the South Church in Gardenton, to marrying my husband Russell and I, and baptizing all 3 of our children...Natasha, Jaden, and Nickolas, and blessing our home. Father Melnyk was always there for us. The Badiuk Family is very greatful to have had the pleasure of knowing him and having him in our lives. We are sooo proud to have called him our friend. Please accept our deepest sympathies. May you all find comfort in knowing that he and your Mother are together again. Your parents will always have a special place in our hearts. May they both Rest In Peace. Sending lots of love from Melanie and Russell Hryniuk and Natasha, Jaden and Nickolas and Marilyn and Nick Badiuk and Blaine Badiuk. - Posted by: Melanie Hryniuk (Friend) on: Feb 22, 2022

  • Mr. Melnyk was my principal at Lord Wolseley in the 60s, but also knew him through Holy Eucharist church, I think, as he did know my family. I bumped into him through the yrs & spoke with him at length when he did my aunt's burial 5 yrs ago & he did remember me. When my Dad passed 5 yrs ago I got in touch w him & he officiated at that. He was such a kind man & always took an interest in anyone he spoke with. I am so sorry for your loss. Take comfort in your fond memories & know many people will have good memories of him as well - Posted by: Vicki Harris-Clarkson (Student) on: Feb 21, 2022

  • Mr. Melnyk was my principal at Lord Wolseley school in the 60s/70s. He was kind and always had a smile and a positive word for his students. I remember him fondly and extend my deepest sympathy to his family. - Posted by: Terri Fast (Former Student) on: Feb 19, 2022

  • Mr. Melnyk was my Dad Alex’s best friend through good times and bad. Mr. Melnyk was principal of the school where I did my practice teaching. I remember him as a caring and professional person who always checked on his student teachers to see how they were doing. After my Dad died, Mr. Melnyk was there for us all. He and Sonia included my Mom at their family dinners and never forgot her. He was like a Grandpa to my kids and was there for big events including their weddings. He officiated at my son’s wedding. He and the rabbi made it a beautiful inter-faith ceremony along with Ukrainian traditions. I will always remember him as a man who was loyal and kind who always spoke so proudly of his children and grandchildren. I send my love to them all. - Posted by: Karen and Terry Imhoff (Family friend and mentor) on: Feb 19, 2022
