RONALD BUCHANAN
With sadness and heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Ronald (Ron) Buchanan, age 84 years on February 12, 2022.
Ron was born August 2, 1937 in Neepawa where he learned the value of hard work, resilience and humility through his years growing up on the family farm. He attended Mountain View school and was an avid baseball player during his school years. As part of the Neepawa Cubs, he enjoyed many successes, including the team's induction into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
Dad pursued his desire for higher learning and received his Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from the University of Manitoba in 1961 and subsequently moved to Ottawa to begin work with the Ministry of Transportation. While in Ottawa, he met his wife Donna and they shared many years there before he got the opportunity to work for Air Command, as part of the Department of National Defence in Winnipeg. He was respected and well known in his engineering field and, he saw all corners of Canada and, the North, during his work to oversee the many projects he was responsible for with the Royal Canadian Air Force across Canada. Dad spend the majority of his career working for DND and made many great friendships that continued on well after retirement.
After retiring, Dad spent time enjoying his many little projects he had on the go along with activities such as curling and snooker. Always social, Dad had the quiet ability to strike up conversation and find common ground with anyone. Mom and Dad also had many visits to Halifax, to visit Cathy and John during their time there. They even travelled to Belgium and visited different parts of Europe during John's NATO deployment.
In recent years, winters would be spent touring around the city to the various hockey arenas watching Ana and Jonah play hockey. Dad also enjoyed the talents of Sasha, an avid guitarist, both in her recitals and in times she would play for them in their backyard.
Dad is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna (Paquette), children, Catherine (John Schwindt) and Kevin (Tanis Miller) along with his adored grandchildren, Ana and Jonah Schwindt and Sasha Smolinski; brother Gerald (Norma Reid). Dad will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Samuel and two brothers, Deryl and Mervyn.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Dad's CancerCare Manitoba team for their care and guidance during this journey along with the staff of 4 North, Victoria General Hospital who cared for Dad with empathy and compassion over his final days.
As per Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will occur. While we will miss Dad's quiet, kind spirit and sense of humour, we are grateful for his long and well lived life.
Flowers are respectfully declined. Those wishing to do so can contribute on Ron's behalf to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Room 1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Phone: 204-787-4143.

Ron has been a valued friend since we were in our teens. Gwen sat behind him in Neepawa high school and had a habit of poking him with the pointy end of her compass when she wanted to get his attention. Ron and I boarded with a couple of spinsters in a small cottage on Carlaw Ave. in Fort Rouge during our last two years prior to graduation as Civil Engineers. We both started our careers working for Defence Construction after graduation in 1961. Although we did not see much of each other in later years as we live in the one spot in Canada (Yukon) that Ron never did visit, we kept in touch. He was a great lifelong friend and we will miss him. We have lost a friend, a true friend, a friend we can easily talk to and be listened to, and be responded back with his subtle sense of humour and wit. We had good and enjoyable times @ work and off work, often over a drink or 2 @ the Saint James Legion, even long after our well deserved retirements, our memorable moments indeed! RIP Ron. - Posted by: Edmond & Anna Li (Co-worker & friends ) on: Feb 19, 2022
