DONALD ROBERT OCHOCKI

Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, it is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Donald Robert Ochocki on February 16, 2022, at Deer Lodge. He was 81.
Winnipeg was his residence for all his life. He is survived by his beloved wife Genivieve (nee Michniuk) of 55 years, his son Russell and his daughter Robin (Rodney). He enjoyed a special bond with his sister Darlene (Larry) and his nieces, Dana (Andrew) and Darcy (Roger). He was predeceased by his parents, John and Jean.
He was a graduate of Tec-Voc High School, where he was part of the football team that won the city championship in the late 1950s. Donald enjoyed playing football and later in life watching his beloved Blue Bombers.
He also enjoyed organizing and planning many family vacations including trips to BC, Florida, Hawaii, and Toronto.
Other passions included curling, fishing, boating, genealogy, listening to 1950s and 1960s Rock & Roll music, and going to garage sales.
He entered the Winnipeg Fire Department on September 1, 1965 and retired October 22, 2000 as Captain with 35 years of service. Other jobs included working at Advance, many small TV shops, and the DEW Line in the Northwest Territories.
He was a talented handyman who built many rec rooms, the family garage, the family cottage, and assisted with his sister-in-law's cottage and his brother-in-law's cottage.
Our family thanks the staff at Deer Lodge Centre 4W who took care of Donald in his final months.
Funeral service will be at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. on February 26 at 1:00 p.m. and will be open to all fully vaccinated family and friends who are willing to provide proof of vaccination.
Private cemetery service to take place at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Let me start by giving my condolences to the Ochoki family. I had the pleasure of knowing Don through his love of collecting rock and roll records. He along with his friend Dave H. (another collector) would drive to my house in Garden City and spend hours going through my latest garage sale finds and chat about this and that. They would both leave with a pile of records. I will always remember and never forget going to the U.S.A. with the two of them a couple of times. To attend record shows. I was much younger then them but Don would always treat me like a son or nephew etc. Rest in peace Don. I will miss you. Loren M - Posted by: Loren (Friend) on: May 11, 2023

  • Our condolences to Don's family. Don and I connected over genealogical research and we developed a working relationship discussing everything from past memories, people we knew, and the development of Family Trees. He was an expert! I appreciated all the assistance that he gave me, the referrals, and even material that he authored. As well, I learned that he was knowledgeable, considerate, and had a most delightful humor. He was mega proud of his family. Don made a positive mark in our world! I will miss our delightful long phone conversations. To Gen and Family, I hope that great memories will bring you comfort and that God will continue to bless you. Jan and Joe Olesko Prince Albert, SK. - Posted by: Jan Olesko (cousin) on: Feb 26, 2022

  • I had the pleasure of working with Don shortly after I started as he was my Captain at 24 STN. He was a gentleman and always brought a positive vibe to the hall. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Ron Lutzer (Co worker) on: Feb 24, 2022

  • MY Tribute is to Don's family and extended members who supported Don and his wife Gen during the last 8 months. Their children took on totally new roles of responsibilities in caring for their parents. This is called Honoring your parents for raising you. God is very pleased, they fulfilled one of His commandments. I am very proud to be your Aunty. May God's Grace and Peace be with you. - Posted by: Audrey Jongstra (Sister-inlaw) on: Feb 19, 2022

  • My condolences to the Ochocki family. I clearly remember Don, and his contribution to our football team. He was a very good player and part of the 1957 championship team at Tec-Voc. This was the first city championship and provincial for the school. I have shared his passing with a few other members of that team. He was a great guy!
