Randy and I were great friends! We met at the X-KALAY Foundation in 1976. We went to ECole St. Norbert School together, we loved playing pool (Snooker). I nicknamed him Cunningham, after the Happy Days Television Sitcom Character of the same name...lol..and of course I was the Fonz, Eh.... I remember Randy had some acne just like me; I mean, we were only 16 at the time. I was much shorter, Randy towered over me. I was born in 1960, too, in June. We had so much fun at X-KALAY, and even now I wish I could be transported back in time to those days - the good ole days, back in the day! My goodness, it was magical - the magical 1970s! Man, the music back then: April Wine, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles...Man O Man O Man what a time! I remember Randy came from Leaf Rapids, like so many other kids, like the Merastys. But Randy was one of the first teenagers to go to X-KALAY, he was there when I got there, if I remember correctly, he and Lance Henry and his sister Janet and their mom, can't recall her name at the moment. Yes, Randy was there when I got there, I remember now, because he was my room mate on the third floor. He was responsible for showing me around, explaining the House Rules, making sure I had clothes, toiletries, toothpaste, that sort of stuff, and he made me feel so at home and welcome. We organized our own 'Teenage Program' because within a few months, more and more teenagers were coming to X-KALY. We would do chores, dishes after supper, work on the weekends in various departments like the kitchen, the farm and the Supply Crew, which obtained food, clothes and other donations from around Winnipeg, and, speaking of the Supply Crew, well, one day there was a big donation of "Shaving Cream." We teenagers, lead by the fabulous duo of Cunningham, the Fonz and other enterprising male youth at the time (Lance Henry, Henry Cyr, Cornelius Merasty, his younger brother, Paul Merasty and maybe one other I can't think of right now) decided to help ourselves to said "Shaving Cream" since we were, after all, of the age where chin whiskers was begging to become a "Thing." We were all enthralled with the 'Shaving Cream" in its new pressurized can with the release nozzle. Well, one thing lead to another and the next thing you know we were chasing each other around, spraying each other with the Whip Cream like Foam. We were soon corralled by our superiors, lined up in front of them like new recruits in front of their Drill Sergeant, and rebuked harshly for our total disregard and wasteful use of the "Shaving Cream." How could we do such a thing? Didn't we know how hard the Supply Crew worked obtaining, not only the "Shaving Cream", but other donated goods? What did we think we were doing? Who did we think we were? What was wrong with us? I think it was either Henry Cyr or Cornelius Merasty who snickered first, and, like the first leak in the dam, it was inevitable that the rest of us lost it as well. Our superiors were now infuriated and the disiplenary action taken against us for our misguided adventure and 'Cheek" was akin to a weekend court marshall: "You will not be permitted to go to the dance this Friday evening and will remain in your rooms all weekend, except for breakfast, lunch, dinner and while you are doing your chores. You see, once a month, we teenagers would organize a dance, not just for us, but for all 70 residents of the X-KALAY Foundation at the time. We had a blast! Randy Marion, I will never forget you. Till we meet again, Cunningham, Rest in Peace. Your friend Brian (The Fonz) Hanslip - Posted by: Brian Hanslip (Friend from way back!) on: Feb 20, 2022
