(JIM) GORDON JAMES HAINES

"Jim" Gordon James Haines, 62, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospice, Thunder Bay, February 24, 2022.

Jim was the son of Len and Rose (Sherman) Haines, born May 27, 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he was educated at Lincoln Primary, Westwood High School and University of Winnipeg. Jim worked for Boeing and Bristol Aerospace before he moved to Thunder Bay in 1995 to work at Bombardier as a Senior Purchasing Agent. This was the last of the three big "B" manufacturing companies that Jim worked for. In 2005, Jim moved on to the construction industry with E. S. Fox General Contractors as the Purchasing Agent for the NW Ontario Region. He really loved his work and was successful, dedicated and trusted as part of the Thunder Bay branch of E. S. Fox. He also worked at Safeway part time.

Jim will always be remembered for his kindness, intelligent mind with so much trivia knowledge and his keen sense of "Far Side" humour. Jim was a forever Winnipeg Blue Bombers football fan and was so happy to see his team win back to back Grey Cups. Jim also loved golfing, a sport his dad taught him as a young boy. He delighted in cooking, especially BBQ for family and was known to prepare his "Jimmy's Secret Ribs" although this secret recipe really wasn't such a secret he was proud to share it.

Jim's refuge was in his rec room watching his Bomber's games dressed in his Bombers attire and tooting his horn at every touchdown, completing countless of crossword puzzles and playing and getting cuddles with his dogs. Just before the Covid pandemic, he travelled to a few dog shows in the Midwest USA with Inez and Percy the dog. That year they travelled to Oshkosh, Bismark and Rapid City (Mount Rushmore) with a final stop in Manitoba, his home, on the beaches of Lake Winnipeg. The visit was capped off with the traditional annual golf challenge with Barry and a fabulous visit at the lake with family and friends.

Jim was loved and will be missed by Inez Lazzari, his pet family Percy and Danny. Sister, Barbara Szabo, niece Dainna (Chris), great-nephew Kaleb. Brother-in- law Barry Watson, nieces Alissa (Scott) (Ela), Jessica Watson. Inez's family, Valerie, Rich and Kyle, Laura and Greg, Luisa and all their children and grandchildren, as well many other extended dear family members and friends across Canada.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Rose and Len Haines, sister Gwen Watson, brother-in-law, Andy Szabo and Inez's father Riccardo Lazzari, aunts, uncles, cousins and his very dear friend Ralph Jones. His beloved dogs, Chase, Judd, Gunner, Luna and Tori.

As per Jim's wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral services. A close family and friends celebration of his life will be held at a future date.

Thanks to all who supported and cared for Jim through his Cancer journey with phone calls, emails, visits, friendship and love. Jim will be forever remembered and missed by those who loved and knew him.

Special thanks to the great team of Doctors, especially Dr Chan, Dr Puskus, Dr Ramchander, Dr Migay, Dr Goodman, the home care nurses at VON, Hospice NW and the very compassionate and kind care given to Jim by the nursing team at St Joseph's Hospital Palliative/Hospice Unit.

Donations in Jim's honour can be made to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation Hospice/Palliative Unit, Thunder Bay. https://www.sjftb.net

  • Jim’s family and mine lived across the street from each other when we were very young in Winnipeg and our families spent many happy times together over those years. Jim was a great fellow. • Our deepest sympathy Inez on learning of Jim's passing. Hearing from you guys just before Christmas was so wonderful but our happy reunion was short lived upon hearing of Jim's illness. I was fortunate enough to be able to have spoken with Jim then and from his hospital bed to say goodbye. Jim was a lovely person and will be missed by all who knew him. I will say a prayer for you both. - Posted by: Pat and Pat Sawyer (Friend) on: Feb 28, 2022

  • Condolences from the Sherman family. Thinking back to when we were young; Christmas dinners with all the families together, a few good parties during university years and family reunions now and then. Even with distance in recent years, some of the most memorable times were when we were back together in Winnipeg with Jim and the rest of our families. When we last spoke a few days ago, we called each other “brother”, remembering that distance separates us, but the closeness never fades. Inez and family, we are thinking of you. Cousin Jeff ( Janine), Auntie Del and family. - Posted by: Jeff Sherman (Cousin) on: Feb 26, 2022
