ANNE (BABI) MANKO
(HENKEWICH)
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our matriarch Anne "Babi" Manko (Henkewich) on Monday February 28, 2022. Babi was a strong, smart and beautiful caregiver to many for 102 years.
Born in Libau Manitoba in 1919, Babi grew up on the farm with her siblings and moved to Winnipeg in her early 20s where she met and soon married Peter. Together they built a loving family that they dedicated their lives to through their 69 years of marriage.
Babi was always happy, and could often be seen beaming with pride at family gatherings - having everyone together was so important to her, and she helped us appreciate the little things too.
While she wasn't a formal chef, she cooked with the best of them making some of the best traditional Ukrainian food in Manitoba. She kept her family well stocked and taught many her cooking secrets. She took great pride in her family carrying on the tradition. Along with cooking, Babi enjoyed collecting ingredients; keeping several gardens, and picking wild berries and mushrooms when in season.
Babi is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Dianne (Mel) and Marlyne (Heinz), four grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
She was predeceased by husband Peter; parents, Hafia and Metro; and siblings, John, Mike (Mary), Kay (Bill), Nick (Iona), Bill (Kay), Mary (John), John (Dolly), Harry (Betty), and Steve (Marion, Dianne).
Babi, we will always remember the life lessons you taught us, how you led by example, being true to each other and so generous with everything you had to give. We felt your love every day and we will cherish your memory forever.
Private funeral service has been held, with interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
