JOHN ROBERT KING
March 25, 1952 - March 4, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of John on March 4, 2022.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 43 years, Linda; son, Bret (Kaylee); daughters, Ashley (BJ) and Meghan (Shannon); grandchildren, Maykenzie, Keanna, Gracelyn, Isla, Scarlett, Hudson and Harrison; mother, Grace; brother, Chuck; nephews, Brian, Dylan, and Ryan; niece, Trisha, and many other dear relatives and friends. John was predeceased by his father, John Sr.
John was born on March 25, 1952, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to John and Grace King. John grew up in the Elmwood area, and graduated from Elmwood High School in 1970. Elmwood is also where he met the love of his life, Linda, who lived down the street on Johnson Ave. John and Linda were married in 1978 and had three children; Bret, Ashley and Meghan. John started his professional career with the Federal Government, where he worked with youth in crisis before retiring after 37 years of service.
John was a great athlete and participated in many sports such as boxing, hockey, baseball and curling. He had an outstanding boxing career and represented Manitoba in the 1971 Canada Games, and was a Golden Gloves champion. John spent his childhood playing sports at Kelvin CC, and was also proud to be part of the Juicers hockey club. John became involved in coaching when his kids began playing sports and he was always a favourite behind the bench.
After retiring, John found a new passion, performing background work in the Winnipeg film industry. He especially enjoyed his time working on the western TV show, "The Pinkertons".
John was devoted to his family, friends, animals, and the community. He loved his family more than anything, and had a heart that was bigger than this world. He was someone who put others first, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. It was evident to everyone that John was so proud of his children and grandchildren. He was their biggest fan and never missed a practice, game, or activity. John was very close with his parents, and provided exceptional care to them. He loved animals, and was often seen walking his dog, Nikki-Ryan in Glenelm, and was known to have a treat for all of the neighbourhood dogs.
John was an active member of the Glenelm and Elmwood community, where he advocated to create safe spaces for youth. He was instrumental in saving the Kelvin Community Club, and was a driving force in its restoration to become the Clara Hughes Recreation Park. John was a founding member of The Glenelm Neighbourhood Association, and was a member of the North East Winnipeg Historical Society and the Elmwood Bear Clan. For John, it was about providing opportunity to youth, taking pride in, and giving back to the community where he put down his roots.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to an animal shelter of your choice or the Bear Clan Patrol.

We love you and will miss you dearly.
Until we meet again. Go Jets Go!

Condolences & Memories (43 entries)

  • I first met John at our smoothie shop, where John became a regular. Beyond being a regular customer, there was nothing regular about John. John shared stories about his family (Linda, his kids, and grandkids), boxing, sports, anything to do with Elmwood, and movies that he was a part of. He genuinely cared about people and the community at large. Golden gloves, golden heart. - Posted by: Doug (and Susan) deJong (Friend) on: Mar 28, 2022

  • I first met John when I started working for the federal government at UIC on Main street. We came to realize we were both from "the hood" Elmwood. lol. Over the five years working there I so enjoyed Johns sense of humour and levity amongst a lot of stuffed shirts. I often wondered how this cool, rough and tumble guy ended up working in an office in a suit no less! Thank God you were there John as there were many days you were the only reason I didnt quit. What stands out in my mind the most was John's caring heart and his sense of humour. Definitely gone too soon. My condolences to Linda and family. - Posted by: Tim sullivan (friend) on: Mar 25, 2022

  • My Deepest Condolences to Linda and the Family on your loss of John. I worked with John in Winnipeg when the Unemployment Insurance was located in the Post Office building. He was a great guy and I remember him fondly even though I haven't seen him in many, many years. Again, my Deepest Sympathy. He will be missed by all who knew him. - Posted by: Bonnie Martin (Co-Worker) on: Mar 15, 2022

  • Saddened to hear of John's passing. John was really a great guy who would light up a room when he walked in. He was always more than ready to help out in any way. He absolutely adored his children and was extremely proud of Bret's prowess as a goaltender. My sincere condolences to the entire King family. I have a lot of very fond memories of our time together with the Selects. Rest in peace John - Posted by: Ric Bender (Bret's coach with Wpg. Selects) on: Mar 15, 2022

  • Dear Linda and family, May it bring you some comfort and peace knowing how far-reaching and deep-rooted is the presence and spirit of John in our community. I am just one of many who benefited from John's advice and support on issues gripping our neighbourhoods. His spirit of activism, his never-ending energy, his faith and belief in the goodness and potential of everyone he encountered, throughout a life devoted to building a stronger, more inclusive city and a more just and equitable world, will endure in all those live lives he touched and in the programs he pioneered. On a personal note I will be forever grateful for John's public service and his advice during my time as MP and later for his encouragement and support in my mayoral campaigns. His example of always putting his family first also had a profound influence on me and all those who knew and worked with him. Wishing you strength at this time of unimaginable grief, comfort from the love of community, and peace with the passage of time. My deepest condolences, Judy - Posted by: Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Friend) on: Mar 14, 2022

  • He was always so sincere to talk to. I'm saddened for his family and friends with his passing. I hadn't seen John for many years and yet, I would think about him from time to time. Seeing his obituary solidifies that he was an extraordinary human being. Seeing all these fine people offering their words of love and honoring John, makes me smile. He - Johnny is a good man. • I was saddened to hear of John's passing. I knew John for many years while working for the federal government and he was a friend and part of our coffee group at the Service Canada Centre on Henderson Highway. John had a great sense of humour and we always enjoyed the conversations about many topics including sports, community activities and his family. I reconnected with John after retirement when I attended meetings through the National Association of Federal Retirees and monthly breakfast gatherings at the Promenade Restaurant in St. Boniface with other former co-workers. It was there that I heard about John's work in the movie industry as a background worker. He actually encouraged me to apply for background work through various casting companies in Winnipeg, and thanks to John, I too was working in the film industry as a background actor. We used to compare notes about what movie sets or productions we had worked on. He was very kind and considerate, and had a great sense of humour. My prayers and heartfelt condolences to his wife Linda and their family. - Posted by: Marie Delamater (Friend and former co-worker) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • My most sincere condolences to Linda, Chuck, Mrs. King on Johnny's passing. My hear aches for you all. I have many fond childhood memories of our time together. Johnny was a friend, and a great and very classy guy. I know words can't ease your pain and I do hope and pray that the great memories you have of this very special man comfort you all at this most difficult time and give you some peace. God Bless You. Sincerely, Dick - Posted by: Dick Frenz (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • We were saddened to hear of John's passing. I remember John as a kind and considerate person . The last time that I spoke with John was at the Elmwood Reunion in 2018. We had a beer together and he told me of his acting appearances in the Pinkerton Series. I wont forget that. It just goes to show how quickly things in life can change and that we should never take things for granted. To the Family, It may seem at this time that no words can bring comfort for your loss. Try to hold on to all of your memories of the good times and to each other. Time will heal. Rest in Peace John. - Posted by: Aubrey and Moira Settee (friends) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • We are still in a state of shock and disbelief since receiving the news of John's passing. John has been one of our best friends for almost 40 years, since the beginning of his hockey coaching days with our son, Justin, in the 6 and under hockey program at Kelvin CC. We would get together every year for Super Bowl, and John was here for that just four weeks ago. Three weeks ago, John invited me to do the Bear Clan walk with him, which I did for two weeks. In the third week, the Bear Clan, together with many others, did the walk in honour of him. Mrs. King, Linda, Bret, Ashsley, Meghan and families, please accept our heartfelt sympathies for your loss. - Posted by: Chuck and Carol Wilson (Friends) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • I was shocked to hear of John's passing. I thought we would have a lot more time together to share a beer or two and remember the stories of growing up. We boxed together for many years and were on the Manitoba team that went to the Canadian Winter Games together in 1971.We had so much fun there. But more than that, we were friends. He was a guy who always had your back and we did a lot of laughing together. He loved his family and was so proud of them and as Chuck said he was a GREAT brother. Chuck, he was also a GREAT friend and I was always proud to call him my friend. Mrs. King, Chuck, Linda, Brett, Ashely and Meagan.. you have my heartfelt condolences. I'll miss his laugh. I'll miss you John. Martin - Posted by: Martin Lesperance (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • This was a tough one, wow. John was an excellent human being, a great colleague, and a good friend. We loved to talk about our kids’ sports and it was obvious that John was so very proud of his kids and grandkids. Condolences to his family. Rest well my old friend. We’ll talk hockey again some day. As it is said, the light that shines twice as bright burns half as long. - Posted by: Claude Carriere (Colleague) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • I was very shocked when Chuck King called to tell me of John's passing...I,like I'm sure others thought John would live a long life, like his father and that just speaks to the frailaty of our time here . I knew John for over 50 years as we both spent time in the ring ...along with Wayne Caplette, Marve Arnason, Denise Bercier,Terry and Joe Jesmer,Charlie Karol,Corbett Ducharme, Rick King...and of course Al Sparks and a host of others at the old Madison Club on Provencher to the many locations of the Pan Am Club. John was always a standup person with a kind heart and a friendly smile for all...who loved his brother Chuck ,his parents, John sr and Grace , his wife Linda and his children Brett,Ashley, and Meagan who are all athletic and competitive as their Dad. Goodbye my friend...until we meet again - Posted by: Bill Turner (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • Oh Linda, I am so sorry. John was a lovely man. You and your family have lost a person who loved you all. The community has also lost someone who represent a lot of soul for the area. - Posted by: Valerie Denesiuk (Friend) on: Mar 11, 2022

  • I too am saddened to hear of John’s passing and send my deepest and sincere condolences to his family. I grew up on Johnson Avenue just down the street from John and have many fond memories of John, his parents and Chuck. It’s been bittersweet reading all the tributes and hearing about the impact John has had on the community. I’m not surprised… I ran into John at a meeting to save the “old” Kelvin CC many years ago and it was clear, he was the one driving the efforts to save the club we all enjoyed so many years ago. - Posted by: Hugh Walker (Childhood friend) on: Mar 11, 2022

  • John sudden passing is a good reminder to hold on to those you cherish. No one can say he wasn't caring, fun and a great role model as a husband, father, friend and citizen of the community. Like the song, John was a true highwayman, we went down a few roads together and I was privileged to have him at my side. There are to many stories to tell about boxing as a youth, riding dirt bikes behind Macdonald's, road trips or just hanging out. He truly made a mark and will be missed. Condolences to the family. - Posted by: wayanae and mary caplette (lifelong friends) on: Mar 11, 2022

  • So very sorry to hear of John's passing. It seems just like yesterday that we were playing ball together on the team from work and enjoying a cold one (or maybe even two) post game. John loved his family very much and spoke of you all very often. May you rest in peace John and my heartfelt condolences to all of John's family and friends. - Posted by: Bob Irwin (Baseball buddy) on: Mar 10, 2022

A very loyal friend. We would spare together at my Dad's place in the country. I always ended up with a bloody nose. It was fun. lol I could talk to John about anything knowing he would keep it between us. John was fun to be around. Had fun at parties or watching the fights together. John never let me down. • My wife and I have been neighbours with John and Linda for over 8 years. They are the best neighbours we ever had. Always willing to lend a hand and share stories. We truly miss him. I believe John always had dog treats in his pocket ready to give to all the dogs in the neighborhood. Our dog would always know when John was in the backlane just by listening and would be so excited to greet him. Out deepest Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Ed (neighbour) on: Mar 10, 2022

  • John was the first one to welcome us to the neighbourhood when we moved in 8 years ago. I saw him every day walking his dog and I would typically stop and chat with him for a bit. I still remember the day when I was sitting on my porch, exhausted from parenting my two little boys at the time and instead of asking how I was, he asked me if I was okay. He knew I looked exhausted and could read me like a book lol. He was always so concerned for the neighbours on a personal level as well as the safety of his neighbourhood which is why he joined the Elmwood bear clan as well as the board of the Glenelm neighbourhood association (GENA). Thank you for all that you did for our community John and may you now rest in peace. - Posted by: Sandra Duffield (Neighbour) on: Mar 10, 2022

He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Shelly anthis (Friend ) on: Mar 09, 2022

  • I've known John 65 years. We played sports and went to school together in Elmwood. Fond memories of playing hockey in his back yard on rink his Dad made every winter. His sense of humor was enormous, which led to some funny situations and incidents in school. Our fondest wishes go out to Linda and family, Chuck, and his Mom Grace (Mrs. Claus). Keep your stick on the ice Buddy! - Posted by: Larry & Pauline Peacey, Paula & Theresa (Friend) on: Mar 09, 2022
