BEATRICE MERLIN MCINTOSH
(nee SMITH)
Beatrice Merlin McIntosh, age 91. Peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on January 31, 2022.
Merlin was predeceased by her beloved daughter Samantha (Sam) in 1984 and her first husband William John McIntosh in 2019. She is survived by her daughters, Andrea (Andi), Roberta (Bert) and Rhonda (Rhon); sister Lindsay Fauquier; nieces, Emma and Sarah; grandson Ben Butcher; great-grandsons, Riley and Marshall; granddaughter Stephanie Gall, and great-grandson David Van der Wekken.
Merlin was born to Frank and Florence Smith October 30, 1930. They gave her lessons in piano, skating, swimming, and art. She turned all into employment opportunities while raising her family in Charleswood. After learning to play badminton under the tutelage of Len Van Roon, she started the Charleswood badminton club and went on to coach the team at Red River Community College with her youngest daughters in tow. Later Merlin wrote a column for the Free Press called Its Your Racket and drove school buses for King Transportation. Merlin retired on Vancouver Island where she played piano at seniors' residences accompanied by her dog. She gave art classes in Nanaimo including at Nanaimo Assisted Living (NACL). She spent her later years playing badminton and tennis and supporting the arts. She learned to play penny whistle and started teaching that too-her moto was 'those who can do, those who can't teach'....but she did both well.
Merlin's bright smile and sparkling presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and met her.

So sorry to hear that Merlin passed away earlier this year. My Dad is mentioned in her obituary for TEACHING her badminton, which truly became a life long sport for her! She sent a beautiful message to my Dad who turned 100 in December of 2021, and then had her daughter Rhonda forwarded a beautiful owl figurine which now resides in our Charleswood 8 acres in a 1 km natural labyrinth on the property my Dad has lived on for over 90 years in Charleswood! I will send a picture of the labyrinth and the owl to Rhonda if she is able to contact me at Len..vanroon@gmail.com. WE had a beautiful phone conversation with her last December and it brought back memories of her vivacious attitude towards life and badminton!!! An unforgettable person indeed and so kind that my Dad was mentioned for his badminton prowess in the obituary!!! - Posted by: Len Van Roon Jr (Fellow badminton player!) on: Aug 07, 2022

I knew Merlin in the early 1980's. She was incredibly friendly and thoughtful. I am saddened to discover she has passed but happy to read that she had a full and long life. I will never forget Merlin and Samantha. My sincere condolences to to the family. - Posted by: Dan Scaletta (Friend) on: May 30, 2022

I first knew her as Mrs. McIntosh or Sam's mom. In later years I got to call her Merlin. She was the kind of person who was always on the go and into sports. Would laugh and talk to you and made you feel like one of the family. I know that she had a long and full life, but I will miss knowing that she is not here any more. - Posted by: Darlene McWilliams (family friend) on: Mar 17, 2022
