MARY-ANN VIEVILLE
(MCKAY)

August 2, 1946 - March 11, 2022

With endless sorrow, the family announces, surrounded by her family, the untimely passing of Mary-Ann Vieville at the age of 75 on Friday, March 11, 2022, in Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre.
Mary-Ann is survived by Roger, her dedicated and adoring husband of 58 years, and leaves to mourn her two daughters, Darlene Asselstine (Glenn) and Aline Vieville; grandchildren, Ryan Asselstine (Pearl) and Chantel Proudford (Adam); great-grandson Miles Alexander Proudford; sisters, Ellen Carlisle (Bill) and Violet Watson (Ross); sister-in-law Vivian Skyba and brother-in-law Henry Armstrong. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Dorothy McKay; brother Robert, sister Linda Speechly; in-laws, Louie and Alma Vieville, Laurent/Pete and Joyce Vieville, Lucille Armstrong, and niece Donna McKay.
Mary-Ann's humble beginnings began in the north end of Winnipeg. She achieved seventh-grade formal education, but that was just the beginning. At 16, she met the love of her life, Roger, and married in November 1963. Before her 18th birthday, Mary-Ann gave birth to their first daughter Darlene.
Anyone who ever met Mary-Ann knew how determined she was. Her entrepreneurship began assisting the household by starting a daycare. Her first client was her nephew Randy Skyba, born the same day as daughter Darlene. Gradually, she added neighbours' children to this enterprise and taught herself to sew, soliciting local merchants, friends, and neighbours for tailoring.
Following the birth of our second daughter, Aline, Mary-Ann decided it was time to grow and applied for a teller position with Acme Merchandise Distributors. She wasn't awarded the teller job but was hired as an office assistant, with duties such as typing and filing. Did I mention she did not know how to type? Not knowing how to type, she bought a typewriter and started to teach herself. She never liked typing, especially since the woman she was assisting was a great typist! Did I mention she was fiercely driven? Within six months, she was the only person in the office. Mary-Ann did not stop there; she eventually became the store manager advancing to Manitoba Regional Manager. On one memorable occasion, never having met Acme's owner Jimmy Pattison, he and two executives dropped in unexpectedly. Before the introductions could be made, she excused herself to assist staff with a customer looking at a sewing machine. After an awkward introduction, she was invited to a cocktail party at the then Winnipeg Inn and respectively introduced as "the only person who ever made Jimmy Pattison wait." Later, with the demise of Acme in 1977, she with partner Marie Mallette started Fancy-Her Fashions at 836 St. Mary's Rd, Winnipeg. Mary-Ann successfully operated "The Shop" until 2002. While working The Shop, she taught herself bookkeeping and went on to keep Vieville Movers and then Ambassador Sales books as well. With these acquired talents, she took on a handful of clients in her semi-retirement, which continued to this day.
Passionate about golf, Mary-Ann and Roger would enjoy local golf courses throughout their travels in Canada and the USA. They enjoyed the competition and interaction of anyone they met golfing, usually topped off by sharing an adult beverage afterwards. During a 2007 excursion, they stumbled onto an RV park in San Antonio, where a fantastic group of friends befriended them. Thank you for the memories Traveler's World friends (too many to name); you know who you are.
Mary-Ann fiercely lived for her family, focused on committed matriarchy hosting family dinners for every occasion. July 1st pool birthday parties for Aline to Christmas Eve gift stealing games, Mary-Ann always wanted to provide unforgettable experiences for her family. She helped raise her two beautiful grandchildren, Ryan and Chantel, whose sun rose and set on. Throughout their childhood, growing years and into adulthood, Mary-Ann spent countless ways and occasions sharing her grandchildren's lives. Ryan and Chantel were treated to vacations in Florida and Texas, camping throughout Manitoba and western Canada, an abundance of golf courses, backyard pool adventures and putting on their green.
Mary-Ann was the heartbeat of the family, incredibly generous, cheering on successes, supporting growing pains, and teaching life lessons to her grandchildren, immediately falling head-over-heels in love with her new great-grandson, Miles. A forever hole will exist in our lives, never forgotten and always present. We love you.

"There is no me without you."

The family of Mary-Ann would like to express their immeasurable gratitude to Dr. Pelletier and Dr. Kasper, the palliative care team and the nursing staff of HSC GB2 and GA4 for their incredible compassionate, kind and dignified care.

  • Dear Roger and family: Please accept our deepest sympathies and condolences in the passing of Mary-Ann. Fred had known Mary-Ann and Roger for many years before I met him, and I met Mary-Ann through our wonderful friends, Dan and Dana Naskar. It is a small world, and I also learned that growing up, Mary-Ann was a neighbour on College Avenue to my brother-in-law, Stan and the Lester family. I will always remember what a lovely person Mary-Ann was, she so easy to talk to, and her smile could light up the skies. Please stay strong for one another, and always keep Mary-Ann in your hearts. She will be missed at every event they share, she was an amazing cook and a great hostess. I will miss you Marianne, no more hour phone calls. - Posted by: sherron kelly (Friend) on: Mar 13, 2022

  • My heart is so saddened by the news of this beautiful, fun, loving, fashionable mother to her daughters and loving wife's passing. She was like a mom to me as I spent lots of time at their beautiful home when Aline lived in the basement. Family dinners and the pool parties. She was a fashionista as I remember her store. She is now resting comfortably and I will forever cherish my memories growing up with her and the family in my life. Thank you Mrs V for all your love towards me. ❤️ - Posted by: Karen Peacock (Friend of daughter Aline ) on: Mar 13, 2022

  • Dear Roger and family. We were so sad to hear of Mary Ann’s passing. We had the great fortune to meet the 2 of you at Travellers World when visiting my dad - John Sawchuk and wife Shirley. You were both so good to them, Rodger helping out with, well everything! And Mary Ann always providing fun, friendship, fashion, and great good!! Such fun, you taught Dan and I the value of great friends, and living life to the fullest. We enjoyed visiting you in your beautiful home in Winnipeg. Again Mary Ann, with her eye for style, colour and fashion shared your home renovation, and business stories. A mutual love as we too are business owners in the home renovation business. (And I always appreciate a great manicure too!) Her positive, exuberant, energy will always make me smile when I think of Mary Ann. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Sending strength and oh so much love. Bobbi - Posted by: Dan and Bobbi Tamblyn (Friends from Thunder Bay) on: Mar 13, 2022

  • Mary-Ann was one of my mom’s best friends when we lived back on Barton Ave. Darlene was my best friend throughout elementary and Mary-Ann’s kitchen table talks are something I will never forget. She always treated us like adults and spent hours listening to us. I recall going to the lake, moms and kids only and having adventures. The amount of nights I slept over there must have driven her crazy but always welcomed us. Mary-Ann and the rest of the clan, Dar and Aline and Roger and Dino!!! Were a huge part of a very happy childhood back in a much simpler time. Wish I could have told her that. So the rest of you Vievilles…..I telling you now. • We are saddened by the passing of our beautiful, longtime friend MaryAnn. Roger introduced Darryl to MaryAnn in 1962 at the Belgian snack bar in ST. B. I met MaryAnn in 1967 when I was engaged to Darryl. Both Roger, best man, & MaryAnn organized our social & were a big part of our wedding in 1968. I worked with MaryAnn at Fancy Her for 3yrs. We moved to Victoria and kept in touch with the Vievilles. No matter if I hadn't spoken to MaryAnn for a year, we could still have an hour long phone conversation and always felt reconnected. • As Marie Mallette's daughter I have fun memories of going to 'the Shop' and having Marianne as my personal fashion consultant! She brought me outfits to try that I would never choose for myself and she was always right. I always left there feeling like a million bucks with my purchases. She also made excellent baked porkchops with tomato soup! Lots of fun memories! You will be missed, Marianne. - Posted by: Kelly Mallette (Family friend) on: Mar 12, 2022

  • We met at TW in Texas about 8 years ago. She directed morning walk in place exercise group at the rec hall. It was so fun and she was a model for us all! She was a beautiful lady and a smile that was contagious. She was always ready to help with cooking and parties. She also made the bestest french fries with vinegar for happy hour! 😊 Roger and her taught us the great game of TOCK. We love it and always follow "Roger's Rules'! Terry and I were so blessed to be her and Roger's friends. Really good people! Our memories of her and Roger will remain forever.
