MAE CATHERINE ELLEN SEWART
(WADDELL)
After a life well lived and three months shy of her 96th birthday, Mae Sewart quietly slipped away on Monday, March 7, 2022.
Mom was born on June 7, 1926 south of Newdale, Manitoba to Annie McTavish and Thomas Waddell. She grew up embracing the values of a farm upbringing and was the second youngest of eight. Mom's seven siblings were Isabel, John, Gordon, Fraser, Tom, Boyd and Menzies. Following a short stint as a teacher, Mom changed her career and became an RN, graduating from St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. It was on the steps of this same hospital that she met the love of her life, George Bruce Sewart, when he picked her up on his motorcycle for their first date.
Mae and Bruce wed in 1948 and were happily married until Bruce's death in 1978. Bruce and Mae instilled the importance of love and kindness for one another in their five children: Kathie, Bruce (Barb), Tom (Karen), Isabel (Gary) and Elizabeth (Bruce).
The family relocated to Long Beach, CA for two years in 1955 for Bruce's work and Mom put her career on pause to raise her children. When back in Winnipeg, Mom returned to nursing and her career culminated in very rewarding work, lastly being the Unit Coordinator at Deer Lodge Hospital. Upon retirement, Mom enjoyed traveling to many destinations with various family members and friends. She had many keen interests, which included duplicate bridge, lawn bowling, curling, Scrabble and politics.
Above all, Mom valued her family and prayed daily for her grandchildren Jason (Robin), Kacee, Johnny, Thomas, Matthew (Chantelle), Annie, Ellen, Calvin, Mac, Isabella and Gordie (Patrick) and great grandchildren Easton, Paiton, Lily, Liam and Jack. Mom exemplified practicality and efficiency in all aspects of her life. Her competitive spirit, vibrancy, wisdom, wit and strength will remain as a guiding light for us all. At Mom's request, there will be no service; a family gathering will take place later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice, although Mom might have said to save the money for your retirement and stop being so wasteful!

You folks may not even remember me or my family, but I sure remember all of you, and of course, your mom and dad. Your dad was one of my earliest friends — when I was three years old! I also recall your grandpa and sure remember Bruce’s red motorcycle! Your dad sold me my first life insurance policy. Your mom was, every time I saw her, so quiet, calm, cool, friendly. She sure had a long time without your dad. You’ll miss her so much. I will always remember Mae - Posted by: Ian Moore (Friend/neighbor ) on: Mar 12, 2022

I always enjoyed seeing Mae and walking through Woodhaven with your family when I was back home visiting my family. She was a lovely lady. Sincere condolences to all of you from the Rathke family. And a big thank you especially to Kathie, Bruce and Jason for your help when I was dealing with my mom’s property. You stepped up to help me as if I was part of your family. Mae raised you well. - Posted by: Karen Rathke (Friend) on: Mar 12, 2022
