WILMA YOUNG
August 30, 1929 – January 26, 2022

Wilma Young (nee Baker) died peacefully on January 26, with family at her side.
She was a loving mother to Kim (Jack), and doting grandmother to Jeff (Alycia) and Heather. She was predeceased by her husband Hugh and her sister Barbara and leaves behind her partner Murray. She adored her sisters-in-law and her many nieces and nephews.
Wilma grew up in Poteau, Oklahoma. She attended the University of Oklahoma for her Undergraduate degree in Fine Arts and Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Michigan for her Masters in Fine Arts with a major in Ceramics. She spent a year studying in Florence, Italy as part of her Masters and became an accomplished Ceramic Artist. During that time she learned to fly a small plane and had many adventures. She was truly a woman ahead of her time.
In 1961 she married Hugh Young and they settled in the house she designed along the river in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where they raised their daughter Kim. She loved nature and animals and was very willing to help Kim rescue or adopt any needy critter that came along. Wilma continued to produce beautiful pottery and lent her knowledge to the local art museum. She had many close friends and loved her Martini at cocktail hour. In 1981 Hugh retired and they moved to Tsawwassen, BC, for 12 lovely years, where Wilma continued her career from her home studio overlooking Boundary Bay. She came to Winnipeg in 1993 after Hugh's passing to be with Kim and Jack and her two grandchildren. Wilma was a very involved Grandmother, a great help to her working daughter, and loved her play dates and sleepovers with Jeff and Heather. She volunteered at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, participating in many of their wonderful trips with her sister-in-law Muffie. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends from her Newcomers group who were very dear to her for the remainder of her life. In 2006 Murray came calling and they spent the next 16 years travelling and embracing life, family, and great friends.
Wilma was very thankful for her 92 years. She felt extremely blessed to have her loving family and the wonderful life she lived. She believed it was time to finish her journey here and wanted her life to be celebrated, not mourned. Wilma left this world as she lived in it, with elegance and courage. She will be forever loved and remembered.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I thought the world of Wilma. She was creative, well-read, well-spoken (with that touch of southern drawl), and quick to find the humour in any situation. Always impeccably dressed and coiffed, Wilma was elegance embodied. She was so proud of Kim and Jack and maybe even prouder of Jeff and Heather. Wilma and my mother were sort of an Odd Couple, but they enjoyed their adventures together. Paul and I send condolences to the Bassey family. - Posted by: Nancy Gillies (Friend) on: Mar 23, 2022

  • We offer our condolences to the family. We knew Wilma as a good person and a friend of our family. Our mother Marjorie and her husband Alastair knew Hugh from the time when they were all young adults in Winnipeg and kept in touch over the years. We got to know Wilma at dinner parties where she shared some of her life stories and always had an interesting perspective on the news of the day. An impressive mind. She was obviously a devoted mum and grandmother having a positive influence on the world around her. - Posted by: Ian Gillies (Marj Gillies son, friend of Wilma) on: Mar 22, 2022

  • Kim, Jack, Jeff, and Heather, I am so very sorry your loss. Wilma was such a wonderful lady and I know she will be greatly missed. Hold on to all the great memories as I know there are many. Thinking of you all. - Posted by: Peggy Poole (Friend) on: Mar 19, 2022

  • I remember Wilma being active in the American Women's Club of Winnipeg for a time and she was always a joy to be with as many of us shared a common heritage of having grown up in the US. Our condolences go to her family. What an amazing and remarkable life! - Posted by: Dorcas Windsor (Acquaintance) on: Mar 19, 2022
