MONA RUTH YOUNG
September 8, 1935 - February 7, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of our mother, Mona Ruth Young (nee Snorro), in Winnipeg.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Ruth Snorro; brother-in-law Lloyd Young; and her children's father, Murray Young. She is survived by her siblings, Irene Young of Flin Flon, MB, Claire Ashmore (Freeman) of Winnipeg, MB, and Frank Snorro (Wanda) of Nipawin, SK; children, Tracy Young-McLean (Darcy) of Saskatoon, SK and Darin Young (Anita) of Fort Langley, BC; grandchildren, Dylan Laybourne, Cassandra Laybourne (Regan), Olivia Laybourne, and Murray Giesbrecht (Crystal); Grace and Benjamin Young; great-grandchildren, Callie and Athena Laybourne; and nieces and nephews.
Mom was born and raised in Flin Flon. As a young woman, she studied nursing in Winnipeg at the Victoria Hospital and was awarded the gold medal for highest marks at her graduation in 1957. Mom lived in several different parts of the country as a wife and mother, including northern British Columbia and the west coast of Vancouver Island. She was not a fan of mountains and rainforest, however, and much preferred her native Manitoba. After raising her children, Mom worked as a crisis line counsellor until her retirement. She was an avid reader, tried her hand at water colour painting, wrote several short stories, and always enjoyed an intellectual conversation. She also had a quirky sense of humour! Mom was trained in voice, a beautiful soprano, performing often at friend and family functions and always sang with the church choir wherever she lived. Mom was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church until she became a resident at Oakview Place.
We thank the staff at Oakview Place for the wonderful care they provided over the past five years.
A Celebration of Life will be held this summer on July 30 in Flin Flon at First United Lutheran Church.
Donations in Mom's memory can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.

How I loved my Aunty Mona! She was beautiful, funny and fun, and had a glorious soprano voice. My favourite photo from my own wedding is of Aunty Mona in her gorgeous flower trimmed hat! Rest in peace and healthy, dear Mona. Loving you always, Ruth Marie. - Posted by: Ruth Marie Newton (Niece) on: Jul 17, 2022
