GUNNAR ARTHUR SANDER
December 27, 1931 March 21, 2022
Born December 27, 1931, Art passed away at 90 years of age on March 21, 2022, after a battle with cancer.
Art is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth along with his children, son Dwight (Bernice), daughter Joanne and son Brad. As well, Art leaves to mourn his grandchildren, Danielle (Chisulo), Brett (Bruce) and Trevor (Breanna) along with his great-grandchildren, Henry, Theo and Hazel. Art had a special place in his heart for Dave, Ainslie, Kyle, Maci and Lennon. Art is also survived by his siblings, Josephine (Josie), Johnny, Elsa (Ernie) and Norval (Jenny) along with many nieces and nephews.
Art was born in 1931 to his parents, Kolbjorn and Mari Sander. Art married Ruth Baker in 1956, to which he always said "Ruth is so much like my mom" which was a very special compliment.
Art had a passion for baseball, to which no other sport even came close. Art always said that if it wasn't for contracting rheumatic fever, which ended his baseball playing days, he would have made it to the MLB! There were many very loud Blue Jays games watched in front of the 'idiot box' where those coaches and umpires probably did hear him holler yet chose to not listen to his valuable advice! Art even painted a picture of himself wearing his Steep Rock uniform with the #7 on it with him on the mound throwing his famous, but often argued about, "risers"!
Besides co-running the farm with Ruth, Art also drove the school bus for over 30 years where he often talked about "his kids" after they were all grown up. Art also drove the Handi Van for many years as well. After retiring, Art took up painting which entertained him for hours and the walls are full of his cherished paintings. Art also took up golf after retiring. He even made himself a homemade driver which got many chuckles along with his homemade very, very heavy putter! Art loved getting onto the golf course, yet many could hear him holler a few precious words along the way - especially the time his club ended up being broken over his knee!
The family would like to express gratitude to Jim and Erika who were always there to offer support in so many ways. We appreciate you both more than you will ever know.
Thank you to the staff at both the Ashern and Eriksdale hospitals for the care given to Art over the last few months.
A private family graveside service to celebrate Art's life will be held in the Faulkner Cemetery with Dawn Tober officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Art's memory to the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital Guild, c/o Irene Sigurdson, Box 474, Eriksdale, MB R0C 0W0.
