MARILYN JOAN DRAIN
June 27, 1934 - March 21, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that Marilyn's family announces her passing on March 21, 2022. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Drain in December 2016.
Left to treasure her memory are her daughters, Rebecca and Melanie (James).
Marilyn was proud of her three University Degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Pedagogy) and worked as a teacher for many years. She taught many different courses but her passion was always teaching High School History (Political Sciences). She also taught a course called Travel (considered to be a History course) in which students learned about a specific country and then travelled to that country. She retired from teaching in 1998 from the Lord Selkirk School Division. Marilyn had many passions during her life. In her early life she was a Skip on a curling team which brought her great joy. She loved her daughters with all her heart, loved swimming in her backyard pool, loved going to Winnipeg Jets games and Winnipeg Goldeyes games, she loved all her numerous pets and she loved travelling around the world.
The family would like to thank the staff of Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall, Manitoba for their care and compassion during her illness.
Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
A private family memorial will be held in the near future.
Special thank you to Jamie, our mom loves you so much.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)
I remember Marilyn when she was our teacher and her name was then "Miss Davies" and she taught Phys Ed at Nelson Mac. She was so serious, and very pretty, and I think it was when she first started teaching and we were all fighting for position. I just remember when a classmate of ours had a relative pass away and Miss Drain took her under her wing and helped her through a very difficult time with tenderness and sympathy. She was so kind to Sandy and I'm sure the girl never forgot the kindness and caring. Miss Davies was special from that moment on in my eyes and I always admired her compassion to her students. Please know we as her former students send our deepest sympathies. God Bless - Posted by: Linda (Broeska) Lane (Student) on: Apr 14, 2022
HELLO DEAR GIRLS - So sorry to read of Marilyn's passing. Your Mom & I were friends in Gr 9 as I had moved to McAdam Ave then. In Gr 10 she went to St John Tech & I stayed in West Kildonan Collegiate. So we lost touch altho we did occasionally see one another at times. I thought I would let you know that I have pictures of your Mom & you would be welcome to have them, They are pretty grainey from being so old but I would mail them to you if you want them. So far I have found only 2 but if I find any more I will mail them to you too. She had a neighbour she went to school with that I correspond with still & I let him know that his school friend had passed away. My thoughts & condolences are with you at this sad time. - Posted by: Irene Cox nee Jamieson (Old friend from McAdam Ave) on: Apr 04, 2022
Dear Rebecca and Melanie, We know the important and loving role your mother played in both your lives, nurturing you as children, and supporting you through life's challenges as adults. Sadness has been bestowed upon you with her illness and her passing. It is bittersweet when you know she is gone but also that it is the end of any suffering, for all involved. May she rest in peace, and may her memories warm your hearts with love when you are missing her. Love, Cathy & June - Posted by: Cathy Hutcheson & June Schram (Cousins) on: Apr 01, 2022
My deep condolences on the loss of your mother. She was an amazing educator and influenced many of her students to strive for excellence. Although my degree was in Music Education, I minored in History and Political Science at Brandon University. During my 40+ year career as a Band Director, I had several opportunities to teach History. I would like to think some of her influence was there in my lessons. - Posted by: Donald Horbas (Former Student (1970s)) on: Mar 31, 2022

Rebecca, Melanie - So sorry to hear of your Mom, Aunt Marilyn’s passing. I remember spending some time in your back yard pool. I have lots of good memories with all my cousins. She’s up there now with Uncle Robert having a glass of wine…heavenly wine! Wayde Drain, Portage La Prairie, Manitoba - Posted by: Wayde Drain (cousin ) on: Mar 29, 2022
My deep condolences on the loss of your mom. Melanie, I went with you amd your dad through your mom's class on the trip to the Soviet Union in 1987. She was an amazing woman in my eyes. Later when I worked for a time at Gaffers as a server, your mom and dad would come in from time to time on long, leisurely dinner dates, where they would share a bottle of wine and savour each course. They enjoyed each other's company so much, it was adorable. I have very warm memories of them both, as I'm sure you have many. She (they) will be warmly remembered. - Posted by: Trish Hallson (Student) on: Mar 28, 2022

Mrs. Drain was my favourite high school teacher. I loved her political studies/history class! Learned tons, she was brilliant. Sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Lorna Doolan (Student) on: Mar 27, 2022
Mrs Drain was my history teacher. Her class was my favourite and I ended up coming back to high school after graduation for an extra year just so I could go to Russia with her. She was a wonderful person. May her memory be a blessing. - Posted by: Kedma cantor (Student) on: Mar 27, 2022
My deepest condolences Rebecca and Melanie on the passing of your mom. I was taught by your mom in High School and was part of her travel class to China in 1989. I still talk about that experience to travel to such a destination at such a young age. She was a tremendous teacher and was so full of knowledge of different parts of the world which I always admired. She also instilled in me the love of travelling which has changed my life. Every trip I make to a different part of our world I think of your mom. Your mom was an inspiration to many- May all of your memories help you through your loss. ❤️ Jana (Unik) Tycholis - Calgary, Alberta - Posted by: Jana (Unik) Tycholis (Student-Travel class 1989) on: Mar 26, 2022

Deepest sympathy to the Family. Your Mom was a beautiful special lady. - Posted by: Carol Scholz (Friend) on: Mar 26, 2022
My heartfelt condolences Rebecca and Melanie … to say her Travel class influenced life choices of young students is an underestimate …her class, along with Mr. Baderl was life-influencing as it took me to the USSR in 1980 and it has become my career since. She defended that class from many in administration who wanted it to end. She was passionate about what it was teaching her students. I particularly enjoyed my visits with your Mom after she retired and had told her how her class changed me. She will be missed but not forgotten.
